Noob Forum?

Posted on 02/11/2010 10:09:01 AM PST by wizard1961

Would a forum to invite newbies to ask questions help increase participation?

“I am STILL learning new things about FR after 10+ years, it’s a very user friendly site.”

Um.....

"How come Free Republic doesn't have avatars?"

Because we'd get more losers like that dude with the homosexual anthropomorphic fox avatar from Second Life...

it’s a very user friendly site.

And some of the users are friendly while others aren't.

“First my name isn’t dude. Second I was trying to help you. You’re on your own now. “

Fair enough.

But.

I will be just fine! My point, though, is I want to increase OUR influence. Times are changing, and new folks are interested. They are not as PC savvy as “we” are. We should make an effort to pull them in.

You WERE trying to help. Thanks! (silly me, I was just told to expect rough stuff... I thought I was “in the spirit” and all that...)

My attempt with “Dude” was for CLARITY.

Sure, lot’s of people here are used to the FR culture.

But... its time we aimed higher.

I see this theme repeatedly: Gee, any expert here knows how a noob should easily become oriented...

This is kinda obtuse, right?

No offense, pal, but I’ve been here going on damn near ten years and I know how it works. If people want to understand what goes on here, they can read the home page. It’ll tell them all they need to know about it.

Speaking of “jumping right in,” there’s a section on the home page entitled “Jump Right In!” - it takes you right to the forums. What could be simpler than that?

If noobs want to ask questions, they can post questions either in the format of a thread or in the comments on the thread. There’s plenty of friendly people here that are willing to lend a helping hand to those who are willing to learn. If people are too sissified and have too thin a skin and they wanna whine about the way they get piled on in here we don’t want ‘em! (Cue Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More”...) Most all of us have gone through this at one time or another (other than the really early guys circa ‘98/’99).

Screw you.

Do we want to keep more visitors, or not?

I’ve been on the internet & in forums since 1993. I develop software. I work with users.

If WE want to increase our influence, the interface can be improved.

I really do not care about my personal learning curve. I care about “your moms” learning curve.

I guess you don't want people around here to like you?

I am with you. I hate those “look at this awesome video”-without-the-slightest-suggestion-what-it-is-about posts. Waste of electrons.

We brought down Dan Ratherbiased just fine with this interface. What success have you had with your software?

"Simple as that. As a noob, prepare to piled on because, well, that’s how we do it ‘round these parts..."

It also helps to keep particularly geeky ideas to yourself for a while - like maybe forever.

It’s self-selecting. Free Republic has no need to kiss up to anyone. On the other hand, you’re welcome. You cannot expect a very successful forum to conform itself to your wishes, which it has done very well without ...

All you seek is here. “

Welcome to the humorous side of FR. Get used to it.

I check out the youtube, and thanks.

On the other hand... while I am certainly willing to work to figure out the rules... what I really “seek” is an easier onramp for visitors. It's a private website run by A Norse God named J** R******* who calls to Valhalla and summons legions of maniacal cats. Get with him on the "onramp" thing. Can't help there.

Directing visitors to a different site is awkward. It's called a hyperlink and see my answer to your first comment above.

I keep reading “this is how we do things” and that is great... but... if, say...

If a bunch of older tea party people wander in with curiosity — just piss on them? Piss on them? Whoa, wrong website, dude.

Do you still need 51% of the vote to win elections?

Don't assume just because your google search landed you here seeking political/tea party/etc. that this place is only about politics. And personally, I dont need 51% of the vote to "win" anything.

Much regards oh, seeker of something, I hope you find it.

Screw you.

Your trajectory is unfortunate. Next you will have a tantrum because your wisdom is not being greeted with cries of joy. In this you are not original... not by a long shot.
