With the holiday entertainment season upon us, it's time to compare notes about what the worst Party fare anyone has ever encountered. There are innumerable Culinary Disasters to relate out there, so why not start early and avoid an Entertainment Faux Pas of your own?
My wife and I worked for a title insurance company in Portland, Oregon for a while back around the turn of the Century, and we had numerous opportunities to experience some of the most goat-gagging recipes that people came up with for office pot-lucks and various event parties.
Some remain legendary, and my wife and I were dredging up a few of them tonight, hence this post.
Our joint vote goes to our Dearly departed former co-worker Rose, who presented the Staff with her personal offering of a very creative Jello mold; the recipe follows....
1 Package Lime Jello
1 Can Tuna Fish in Oil (it's important...)
Frozen Green Peas
Prepare the Jello per the box. To help cool it, add the frozen peas to the hot/warm jello (but make sure it is not hot enough to cook the peas...). As the Jello starts to set, add the partially drained Tuna, pour into the mold of your choice, and refrigerate until set.
To serve, turn the mold out onto a dinner plate, and the residual tuna smell will draw plenty of flies to garnish with...
The Tuna in Oil is important because when served, and as the mold warms to room temperature, the residual oil in the tuna adds a marvelous rainbow sheen (that contrast nicely with the fly wings) to the melting jello and the mostly raw peas....this recipe is obviously about the texture but don't discount the aroma...
Sounds tasty. Wouldn’t have to fool me to make me eat it =)
That’s what she said...
I am trying to think, but have to post so I can come back to this thread.
And 7up with Sherbet is delicious!!
Well I am a “seafood” eater-when I see food I eat.
So I have never encountered any party food I did not like.
Not meaning to get too far off topic but my mother in law once made a birthday cake with these odd little candies all over it. We all asked why they were on there, she said, “Oh I’ve had these in a drawer for five or six years and I didn’t want to waste them”.
sushi always need to be eaten with wasabi or tea (anti-oxidant to kill any bateria in the fish)
My mom’s succotash/oyster casserole.
Extremely sweet Silver Queen corn, lima beans, eggs, milk, more sugar just in case the corn didn’t already put you into a diabetic coma and the crowning glory, raw oysters.
Slop it all together in a casserole dish, bake it until it’s semi-solid like a custard then sprinkle Ritz cracker crumbs over the top and broil.
My family adored it and begged her to make for every gathering.
I once ate a mouthful.
Once.
punch with Sherbert and 7up.
every wedding I have ever attended that had no dancing, featured that punch.
Try it - it was a staple for me and my family in the 50’s for picnics - lake outings - made sandwiches with it... make it without the mayo - store it in the fridge - then add mayo upon serving ... works great ... kids love it... on toast, crackers, etc.
options - a little garlic seasoning - be creative...
But - SOME just can’t handle a bit of baloney
The worst as in “Cheepest”?? Or Bad and made me sick???
Cheapest= vienna sausages and saltines and spray cheese
Worst= Spaghetti with raisens .....yuch...
Pork, beef, chicken (the major 3). Softshell turtle, catfish, bass, bream/perch. (that's 7) Elk, moose, deer. (that's 10) Squirrel, porcupine, lobster (don't ask about that grouping, but it's good). Salmon, red snapper, shark, and mmmmmmm...... scallops. (that's 17). But there's still rattlesnake, possum, coon, and others.

Spampons.
You are the winning post.
A party where some guests did cheese fondue...was ok until they decided to add the limburger....the smell was so bad they cleared the house out. REALLY pissed off my friend who was hosting the party! Needless to say, it wasn’t a party that went on into the wee hours!

You beat me to it!!
