2,000-year-old intact female skeleton with gray hair unearthed in Hubei

A 2,000-year-old intact skeleton of an elderly woman was unearthed from a tomb from the early Western Han dynasty at the construction site of an industrial park in the north of Zhuchengjie, a satellite city of Wuhan, capital of east-central China's Hubei Province...

The archaeological team said that when exploring the tomb numbered M6 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Nov. 19, they found a nearly intact outer coffin and almost no water had leaked into it. More surprisingly, there was a well-preserved dark brown skeleton inside the inner coffin, with a lot of gray hair still on the skull.

The coffin was tied with seven pieces of hemp rope. It was identified as the skeleton of a woman aged about 70 years, according to the funeral customs of the early Western Han dynasty, the distance between the chin and the pit of the stomach; bone structure and thickness; as well as other evidence.

The archaeological team explained that the woman's skeleton and hair were well preserved because she was buried in multiple coffins, with the outer coffin covered by a thick layer of special plaster, and hair is not easily damaged by water.

At 2,000 years old, what would you expect?

I'm a fraction of that and got some gray creeping in.

Now I know!

the distance between the chin and the pit of the stomach

WTH is the "pit of the stomach" on a SKELETON?

The body of the sternum, about twice as long as the manubrium, is notched on each side to receive costal cartilages 2 to 7. Transverse ridges may indicate its development from several pieces. The xiphosternal joint (i.e., the union of the body of the sternum with the xiphoid process) is usually fibrocartilaginous, but it too may become ossified. It is at the apex of the infrasternal angle and is usually at the level of thoracic vertebra 10 or 11.

The xiphoid process is a small and variable piece of hyaline cartilage that contains a bony core. It lies in the epigastric fossa, or "pit of the stomach."

You're the BEST, CIV!

What I want to know is, what does that distance have to do in identifying the sex of a skeleton that is 2000 years old?

As the boobies sag the chin is necessarily pulled ever further lower...

I am still in shock over this find:

Bye, Bye Beringia (8,000 Year Old Site In Florida)

""I was intrigued with their level of civilization," she said. "They exhibited a civilization far beyond what had been previously believed that ancient Indians in North America and Florida would have shown." The Windover site, named for the sprawling rural housing development that surrounds it, bore archaeological treasures that amazed experts with their quality and quantity."

*Skeletal remains of 169 people, split almost evenly between males and females, ranging from 6 to 70 years old. About 75 of the skeletons were relatively intact.

*90 intact human brains that include the oldest DNA samples in the World.

*Artifacts of wood, bone, and seed that were made into jewelry and tools, providing insight into the ancient peoples' lives."

*Tests showed the oldest skeletons were buried 8,100 years ago. The youngest was placed in the ground 6,900 years ago."

"To put this into context," Doran said, "these people had already been dead for 3,000 or 4,000 years before the first stones were laid for the Egyptian pyramids!"

“Dear, this gray hair makes me look old. Would you like me to dye my hair to make me look younger.”

“Hon, I love you looking your age. Dyeing your hair would only make you look like a silly old woman.”

[Archeologists are in a quandry about the identification of a mummified body found stuffed into a wooden box at the foot of the tomb. It appeared that the man, perhaps a slave of the woman, was beaten to a pulp and placed there as some sort of sacrificial ritual.]
