My sister stopped over this morning. We got back to talking about moving to another state....again.
She stated Texas has been calling her, she is an RN. The hospital she works at now used to have several booths, recruiting new grads. Now they have none. They are constantly invited to "luncheons", in which they do not participate. They have stopped hiring, as I have found out trying to find a new job.
My sister said they are encouraging recent grads to go to Texas, to get their bacholers & RN license.
I know, from FR, TX is booming. My sister has a friend who moved back to Houston, TX, owns 3 homes in which he rents and said he could get me a great paying job in the oil industry (I hehehe'd at that one).
With my sisters RN license, she wouldn't have a problem getting a job, and perhaps at the rate she is paid here in NY.
We are very nervous about leaving our home state, been here all our lives.....but they are killing us. She asked me to post a thread, specifically to TX FReepers, just for some information regarding the Houston area.
We are suburanites and very Conservative. We would NOT bid well in ANY area that is slightly blue.
We also have questions regarding weather. I (and my sister) must claim "stupid" regarding this subject. We are used to 4 seasons, etc. How is the Houston area, or it's suburbs(must be suburbs. We CANNOT live in a "city" type area).
If I remember correctly (in which she pointed out) Austin is lib, correct?
The last thing we want to do is move across county, only to wind up in a mini NY.
To all you Texans out there, any information would be grateful, especially around the Houston area.

LOL- my ten year old daughter is always fascinated by the mixmasters when we have occasion to go through the big city. I do have to point out that Abilene is full of lousy drivers, though- just have to keep an eye out for them.
Well, sometimes it can’t be helped. After moving to Deep East Texas, I won a surf and turf dinner from a radio station. Yep, I had to talk smack when I learned that surf and turf in that area meant catfish and chicken fried steak. Some things are just wrong and need to be pointed out.

My kids spent their first decade in Deep East Texas, and unfortunately my daughter’s first sight of a real mix master was from the top, on the back of my motorcycle. She liked to have blown out both of my eardrums with her screaming.
Roger that! We’re more in a position to pick and choose which snotty Yankees we let in these days!

If I am looking for a way OUT of my "home', why on earth would I make fun of a place I would now call home?
The only problem I would have with TX, as I do NY is the illegal aliens.
Besides the only radio I listen to is talk radio and my cd''s, which are mostly 70's am, with some 80's freestyle and pop.
Don't ask me about the new comer's. I have no IDEA....and I like it that way.
And whats all this crap about vampire and werewolves? I had a 50 something woman SHOVE a pentagram in my face knowing exactly how I would react to it. This freakin world is upside down....and I want off!

There are several places noted in Texas, but also Raleigh (and Durham and the Research Triangle) and Nashville (no income tax)
I read the actual article in Forbes and it is much more complete and includes smaller cities separately from the top 25 big cities so it might be worth checking out too.

The medical center in Houston is freaking amazing! I loved working there when it was still young- 15-20 years ago. NASA folks living down there are conservatives. Lots of old family money from oil rooted there.
Downsides would be that it’s Harris County. They let a lot of people out of jail there due to overcrowding. Plus lots of Katrina folks rode the buses there and never left.
More pluses...It’s not NY. It’s not Austin. You couldn’t pay me to live in Austin. “Keep Austin Weird” makes them proud. DFW is where I am, and I swear every other person is here from California, NY or NJ. Like me - I’ve lived half my life in NJ.
But like I said, the medical center is one cool place. Everything you could ever imagine medicine-wise right there.
Getting used to the no-season year took a few years to get used to, but that’s what airplanes are for. I’d much rather live without seasons if it means lower taxes, lower cost of living, and less liberals to annoy me all year.

You’d be surprised how many come down from the North and other places and try to poke fun at some of our people, places and way of doing things and constantly brag about ‘how much better this or that was at home’.
My mother, who is an RN, tells the story about an RN who moved down to Texas from NYC and was always spouting about ‘that’s not the way we always did it’, and ‘this and that was so much better back home.
The supervisor happened to drop by, overhead her mouthing off and told her, ‘If you don’t like things here in Texas, there’s a bus leaving everyday for NY’.

Not even close.
Baytown has one of the highest per capita number of millionaires in the country. Most of them are retired Exxon people. May not live like there is a lot of money in Baytown; they just don’t spend it.
I’m familiar with Baytown...it’s a hellhole. I also know some of the Exxon millionaires and you’re right...they don’t spend it... and it shows.
