Chicago Jogger Critically Injured by Pit Bulls

A Chicago man was left in critical condition after two pit bull terriers attacked him as he jogged along the city's lakefront Monday morning.

The 62-year-old man was running in the city's South Shore neighborhood at approximately 6 a.m. when the mauling occurred. He sustained bites all over his body, including on his face.

"They were just going after the man like he was a piece of steak," Stanley Lee, who swung a baseball bat at the dogs in hopes to free the jogger, told MyFoxChicago.com. He went on to say the dogs went for the jogger's throat, face and arms, and called the attack was the worst thing he's ever seen.

Police officers found the dogs a short distance away from the site of the attack and fatally shot the animals as they attempted to attack them, department spokesman Officer Robert Perez said.

Neither officer was injured, he said.

Pit bulls are not the only dog that is easy to make mean, but probably the most infamous.

Buy Sabre Bear Spray with a Holster model. GREAT STUFF!
Bears, Dogs, Thugs! Works at 35’ like a fire extingusher.
I never leave home without a bottle on my belt when I jog.

This type of problem is not just with pit bulls.

Almost all dogs have a natural tendency to chase things that run from them. It’s part of that whole I’m-a-dog thing!

Yes there are proper times to shoot a dog. Cop or not.

What many object ot is shooting dogs who are enclosd in their own backyard and cops come into the yard chasing a suspect and blow the dog away. Or kicking your cat in the house and telling the homeowner they’re lucky they didn’t blow the effing cat away.

Very few dogs will bite a jogger that isn’t in their own yard. Even fewer dogs will continue attacking after the first bite.

“Almost all dogs have a natural tendency to chase things that run from them.”

From the Fox article:

“Travis also said part of her office’s investigation will be to determine how the dogs were cared for, explaining that dogs do not typically attack people, and when they do it is often after they have been mistreated.
“Dogs don’t just attack,” she said.”

Way back, for a lot of years my pretty much exclusive more of transportation was a nice 18 speed bike.

I was chased by MANY, MANY, MANY dogs. I can tell you I don’t blame the dogs... they were just doing what comes natural.

I once had two pit bulls leave their saliva on my ankles when I was running while the owner watched and didn’t even try to call them off.

You forget that most dogs don't have the intellect to distinguish a sidewalk from a yard territorially. And I know of a case that a jogger was hit by a car in a street trying to avoid a vicious dog that chased him there.

You need to consider such things.

When the two pit bulls went after my ankles, I was not running away from them, but if anything parallel or toward them. And I was on a sidewalk, not in a yard. As I previously posted, the owner didn’t try to call them off. Where was the owner in the case of the pit bull attack of this jogger?

Well, in my experience, I’m not scared of dogs. The one thing I will do is stand up as tall as I can appear, NEVER turn my back to them, and just stare them down.

Problem is that doesn’t work with pit bulls... they can and will attack no matter what.

And I haven;t been bit since I was about 11, so whatever I have been doing, its worked for over 40 years.

I would hope that most people realize that it is in their own interests to keep some sort of restraint on potentially dangerous animals even while on their property. If I had been mauled or even seriously bitten by these pit bulls, I would have sued their owner to hell and back. I won a lawsuit against the owner of a German Shepherd that bit my calf while I was running on the shoulder of a road.

Joggers need to be careful around dogs. Running causes a chase and attack response in dogs. Joggers sometimes put in earphones and can't hear the dog, car, train, that will get them.

Rule. 1 Don't run where there are dogs. They will chase and attack you.

Rule 2 Pull your head out of your acoustics and listen to what is going on around you.

Rule 3 Run on a proper track such as a high school track. You paid for it, use it!

Rule 4 Don't run if you see a cop! He will automatically chase and attack you.

I like walking. In all my 65 years, I have NEVER been bitten or ambushed by a dog.

I’ve been jogging in the streets for over 40 years.

I’ve seen hundreds of dogs and was never attacked by any of them.
