yep, Facebook, Twitter and Video Games are what light bulbs used to be.

3 useless items and one useful one.

You really have it backwards!

The Teaparty came about for ideological reasons, technology had nothing to do with it.

If FB and Twitter didn't exist, it would still have come about.

Looks like you’ve run out of things to say. Being as you’re not one to walk away from an argument, you didn’t have much to say in response to their statements.

What is there left to say, FB is simply a social vehicle and nothing more.

I have responded to all of their statements, which are essentially the same nonsense you were saying, 'don't say bad things about our toy'.

"And while you give a bunch of nonsense, the fact is that the world would not notice if FB ended tomorrow."

Right because 900 Million accounts would stop all at once and no one would notice. (that is equal to almost 1\7th of the population of the entire planet) 100's of Millions in ads and not to mention the online commerce that takes place on FB would seek to exist and no one would notice.

I think I've figured your problem out.

Its simple. You haven't a clue about any of this.

Hilarious! My sides hurt I’ve been laughing so hard over this back and forth.

No matter how many FReepers presented you with facts, you have dug in your heels that FB is nothing other than social — it doesn’t matter you have been proven wrong over and over, that’s your story and you’re sticking to it.

Obviously you are not interested in any form of entertainment, which is your prerogative, however that does not mean something is useless to others, just because it is useless to you.

As has been pointed out to you, it has proved to be very useful to others, and in many cases it has also proved to be financially beneficial to many as well. For example, we promoted our Church’s recent Pancake supper on FB and were pleasantly surprised by the number of folks who attended for the first time because of FB. We are a small congregation and our spring and fall suppers are our 2 big fundraisers each year, and publicity (especially free publicity) is good for us.

The graceful thing to do would just say “Glad you find it to be of use, I don’t, but that’s just me” instead of taking the attitude that because it is useless to you, it is just useless, period.

I will type slowly for you. It is not the lightbulb, but the reaction to it by those less able to handle change.

Yes,I got that, but the problem is that the lightbulb actually had value.

It was a very poor analogy, no matter how slow you type it.

And once again, your analogy is regarding a social value.

Any fiancial uses it has are small compared to the key use, which is simply people talking about themselves and hoping they are 'liked'

Once again, the market would make a very rapid adjustment and find other venues.

The chief loss would people to people who are bored and have no one to talk to about how important they are.

And you know this how?

Yes, it has a social use to me, but that is small in comparison to the financial gains I have made because of it. So once again it has been shown to you that it is not useless. Another usefulness it has - a friend of mine had a stroke this afternoon. His wife called a friend and that friend posted a prayer request to FB, prayer chains were started and got quicker word of mouth than any phone tree could have managed.

You find it useless, fine. Others of us find it useful. How about being an adult and admit your opinion is not the be all and end all?

By the way - your continued posting on the subject is purely social and you are hoping people will "like" your opinion on the issue. No different than using FB. Except for one little difference, FB postings can be useful, your posts here on this subject are not.

"Once again, the market would make a very rapid adjustment and find other venues."

I see, so tell us what these would be. And explain about how the many businesses who operate on FB would make this transition to these new venues and maintain their cashflow.

Your lack of understanding of how BIG FB is is very amusing. Do you understand that we are talking nearly 1 Billion accounts? Hahahah tell us really what could be up and running inside of 6 months that could handle 1 Billion accounts? hahahahah

No, your lack of understanding of how effective the Market is laugable.

Yes, FB is big, but that doesn't mean it is important, only that a lot of people are self-absorbed with their own lives.

Once again, for those who can't have a hard time reading simple English, whatever 'use value' FB has, it is small in proportion to the fact that it's primary use is social.

Now, because you can post some positive things about FB, doesn't mean there aren't negatives as well, like loss of privacy and people being victimized by criminals.

Why would it have to be 1Billion, the number doesn’t reflect how effective the marketing is.

Facebook: Worse than a Waste of Time, but with Pix

July 8, 2009
http://stackblog.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/facebook-worse-than-a-waste-of-time-but-with-photos/

Facebook is a waste of time. And here are a few more reasons to hate it:

1. I keep my “friend” list to people I have actually met. That means I’m constantly risking annoying or offending nice people who have read my articles or books, or who have heard me speak, or who otherwise want to get to know me better. (See my website, please: It has lots more information than my Facebook profile.) But if I don’t keep my list to acquaintances, then I get deluged with information about people I don’t know doing things I don’t care about.

2. Even the people I do know seem to post all sorts of “status updates” that provide information about them doing things I don’t care about. So you’re tired: So what? So you’ve been up late working on a project: Maybe you should spend less time procrastinating by reading and writing on Facebook and get your freakin’ work done! So you’re celebrating some event in your life that you’re not specifying and I’d have to scroll back through dozens of other people’s postings to find it . . . ah, forget it. Sorry. Warmest congratulations on–whatever.

3. Many of my Facebook friends are very smart people. Not just a little bit smart, but graduate student smart. I know that partly because many of them are, or have been, my graduate students. Yet they so often sound so witless on Facebook that I wonder how they ever got accepted into Regent College and how I ever passed them in my courses. How can a medium of social linkage be a good thing when it provides us opportunity after opportunity to embarrass ourselves and develop contempt for each other? No, I prefer to recall these students in their intelligent mode, thoughtfully stroking their chins in class, slowly raising a hand to offer a well-phrased question or even a properly deferential inquiry as to whether I did, at least in this particular instance, know what the hell I was talking about.

4. I am too vulnerable to feelings of guilt for shirking what I suppose are social obligations. Someone wants me to join a cause about which I know little and care much, much less. Someone else wants me to be a “fan” of something uninteresting or weird or banal. (Become a “fan” of endangered species! Or good government! Or the Bible!) Still another “friend” sends me a goofy virtual gift, or pokes me (Do that again and I’ll break it off), or suggests someone else I should befriend (and now they somehow know that they have been nominated, and are breathlessly waiting to see if I’ll come through–or so I imagine). And, worst of all, someone I don’t like at all but with whom I have to make nice for professional or political reasons then asks me to be his or her Facebook friend. What I’d like to do is become their Facebook enemy and flame them. But instead I have to carefully weigh up expediency and honesty–and who wants to spend time doing that?

No, I’m no friend of yours, Facebook. You might have been a fun thing in your original form for 15-30-year-old singles who had lots of time on their hands and lots of loneliness to assuage. But you’re mostly a timesink, and my life is threatened by those at every turn already. I’d quit you right now, except…

…it is fun to see people’s photos. Astonishing, sometimes. And heartwarming especially to see those of beloved friends and relations far away.

So I’m staying on for that. But only that. Don’t ask me to become a “fan” of anything. Don’t ask me to participate in another pointless survey: “Find Out How Pathetic Is Your Judgment Regarding Wise Time Use by Taking This Easy Quiz!” And do not ever, ever poke me.

Facebook is a Waste of Time

By Mark Ewbie

There. I’ve said it. And the relief is tangible.

I have tried using Facebook for a year or so, in order to market myself, make ‘friends’ and earn money.

Hours and hours of liking stuff, posting stuff, sharing, linking and friending.

Net result?

Zero.

Sure, every time I log in I can see lots going on, and messages to read, photos to look at.

But in terms of getting traffic to my web pages the exercise has been entirely pointless.

Therefore, due to preferring the idea of writing my own stuff rather than reading other people’s – I have decide to quit my FB Groups and put effort where it has a chance of making me some money.

No more wasting time on Facebook.

"Yes, FB is big, but that doesn't mean it is important, only that a lot of people are self-absorbed with their own lives."

Seriously do you realize how idiotic your statement is? Of course people are invested in their own lives. They use Facebook to share things with their friends and family just like they used to do with snailmail letters then telegrams and then phonecalls and then with e-mail and now with Facebook.

Facebook is just the next step, nothing more. There have always been nattering nabobs down through history like yourself poopooing each of the advances in communications. I would even bet you have long dead ancestors in Europe who liked to chuck their wooden shoes at infernal machines that scared them.

Further, I want you to know you are certainly entertaining. You've provided many belly laughs to me and a few friends who I share your responses with.

This is what I use FB for. I have family and friends who live out of state and many miles away from me and I enjoy seeing pictures and video clips that they share with their family and friends. I agree that some people post TMI or inane stupid stuff on FB but I can easily ignore that just as I do the email chain letters my SIL feels she has to send me a couple of times a week.. And I’ve gotten back in touch with two old friends, one from high school who I lost track of many years ago and am so glad I did. I’ve also gotten “friend” requests from two people I’d much rather not communicate with anymore and easily ignored them. I also “unfreinded” a teenaged great nephew whose posts were riddled with obscenities and drug use references and I let him and his parents know exactly why I did so.

FB, just like any other electronic media or even old school media like snail mail, post cards, telephone calls, is all in how you use it or choose not use it.
