I Once Saved a Drowning Squirrel From a Horse Tank With a Hoe...Vanity
1/11/2013 | JouleZ

I went out to my garden by the barn and heard splashing in the horse tank. I saw movement and ran to see what the heck was going on when an exhausted squirrel rose up and tried desperately to claw her way out of the metal tank. She couldn't and was swimming in circles.

I grabbed a hoe and after a few failed attempts, got her out. I was afraid to touch her with my hands because of fleas and potential disease. She finally used her teeth to bite the edge of the hoe and I was able to lift her out to safety.

She just laid on the ground, exhausted. Too weak to move but breathing. I was going to leave her there but then my horse came over and tried to stomp her with his hoof. Haflingers do that kind of thing.

Finally, I got her moved out of the horse pen and she laid on the ground for hours before she could move. Finally, off she went. The End.

Well not really. I think she's the same one who comes into the garage to eat dry dog food and crawls up the side of the house and peeks in the window sometimes. The real End.

My next door neighbor had sticky traps for mice. Gopher snakes used to come to get the stuck mice and got stuck themselves, giving us an appreciation of the way the La Brea Tar Pits used to work.

We would rescue the snakes, and put them in an aquarium for the education and erudition of my daughter. After the snakes recovered, and grew up we released them into an appropriate meadow. One mouse a week is plenty and to spare for a snake.

Kill it. It’s a rat. It breeds like rats too.

Once my sister made me drive miles to a large wooded area and walk 20 minutes to release a mouse that was in a pail under the sink.

That act may well go down in Squirrel Folklore.
That Squirrel will never forget you!

In fact, I’m sure we’re supposed to report this kind of behavior to our local authorities; certainly to dept of wildlife.

Do other bulldogs swim?

Years ago, our old brindle jumped headfirst into my parents’ pool...and promptly sank like a stone.

Dad: “You might want to think about bathing that dog more often. I think he left an oilslick and bulldog butter in my pool”.

I didn’t mean to imply that your Haflinger was imaginary when I asked if he was really a horse. I meant, is he technically a horse, over 14 and a half hands, or is he actually a pony?
Do you drive him at all? Driving is such fun, especially with a tough, curious, determined soul like a Haflinger.

On our rural property, we trap them and shoot them because they are such pests.

Agree. Of the three I believe the horse was the smartest.

Dang! I loved “The Tudors.” Never tried watching it to the accompaniment of a befouled animal cleaning himself, though. I’ll try it next time I pull out the Blu-Ray.

Years ago I was visiting my sister and she said "Watch this". She grabbed a slice of bread, opened her front door and whistled. A squirrel scampered down a tree, hopped up her steps and reached up and took the bread she handed him which he then scampered back up the tree with.

I thought that was pretty cool.

Haflingers are gorgeous! Any pics? Hate squirrels. So does my rat terrier.

I learned to place a 2x6 board in my water tanks. slightly longer than the width of the tank.

This allows animals to get out, and also gives me leverage when I need to break ice in winter.

I did this after finding about six drowned squirrels in the tank.

My city friends, from Tempe, Arizona where I moved from, are appalled that we trap and shoot the squirrels. Of course, they only see them in the parks there and think they are so “cute”. They also think beef comes shrink-wrapped and milk comes in a plastic carton from the supermarket, as well. City folk!
