I can't wait for Chris Wallace of Fox News to ask - really ask - a Democrat if JFK could get the nomination today, and/or if the Democrat Party really is big-tent (accepting of Dems who are pro-second amendment, pro-across-the board tax cuts, pro-life, pro-traditional marriage), etc...
If one could go back to JFK's time and ask him personally if he would support same-sex marriage, I wonder what he would say. And JFK supported across-the-board tax cuts, too, btw.
One thing that we could take from the interview though is that there is no reason for the GOP to say that they are "closed for repairs." If the GOP-e and their shills who appear on television as hosts and guests would just accept the Tea Party with open arms, and accept that the Tea Party now apparently leads the GOP, then things would be just fine.

No. The hard-edged Lefty interest groups are too deeply embedded in the mechanics of the party. Particularly its fundraising.
Republicans are so radical these days that Reagan couldn’t even get nominated.
Except of course they have nominated Republicans far to the left of Regan - like Dole, McCain and Romney.

Funny how no one ever seems to suggest that maybe the democrats might need some moderation.
Hell, George McGovern couldn’t even get the democrat nomination today! Let alone JFK or a Hubert Humphrey.
They trot out old Bob Dole because Gerald Ford is now dead. And in ten years they’ll ask Mitt Romney if he could get the “nomination today” when he shouldn’t have gotten it then, and that was just last year.
Bob Dole should never have been the nominee of the Republican Party. He was forced upon us as John McCain and Mitt Romney were, and also the Bushes.
Reagan was the only man, through the power of his ideas and power of speaking, to get through the establishment’s gauntlet, and he won a 44 state victory then a 49 state victory. And the republican establishment has been doing everything in its power since to prevent such victories (and overwhelming democratic defeats) again!
You do realize that it isn’t the Republicans that have become so radicalized - it is that the Dem Party has become so monolithic - that ANY political party that starts becoming non-monolithic, non-top down (like the Dem Party presently IS) that people will automatically call the Republican party “radical”
And what is occuring on the right, will occur sooner-or-later on the left, with super progressives eventually shaking up the Dem party (as there is a Dem-e, along with a Gop-e.).
What Independents and Libertarians do will decide the future of the political spectrum.

Question: Are people like Bob Dole, McCain, Romney, etc, as harsh on the Dem Party?

And JFK was - Oh Horrors - a veteran.
If Dole had his way, "Reagan wouldn’t have made it" in 1980!
That was when Dole dropped out of the GOP presidential primaries (because Reagan was kicking his ass) and urged Ford to jump in as a "stop Reagan candidate".
Since Ford had already proved himself (with Dole as VP candidate) unable to beat Carter in 1976, it seems Dole was less concerned with stopping Carter than he was with stopping Reagan.
And that tells us what kind of Republican Dole was then and is now.
