Dalai Lama says ‘okay’ to gay marriage
Belfast Telegraph ^ | 07 March 2014 | Antonia Malloy

The Dalai Lama has voiced his support for gay marriage and condemned homophobia, saying that sex is fine as long as it is consensual.

Speaking during an interview with American talk show host Larry King, the Buddhist monk said that gay marriage was “okay” and a “personal matter”.

He said: "If two people, a couple, really feel that way, it’s more practical, more satisfaction, and both sides fully agree, then okay!” …

” Most Buddhists in their homelands find this behavior disgusting.”

I think it would be correct that most are not homosexual, but I wonder where you get your information that they find this behavior disgusting. Certainly the Thai Buddhists (80 to 90% of Thais) are very tolerant of gay people. Patong hosts a gay parade each year. Gays and “ladyboys” are regulars on Thai TV soaps. Gay marriage is permitted. I think the Dalai Lama’s attitude is typical of the Asian Buddhists I have known.

No, I’m sorry. I don’t much keep up with what is going on in Tibet anymore.

Most recently, I recall following some article a few years back about the Chinese flooding the streets with observers to cut down on a new rash of self immolations by monks, but I don’t know what happens there now.

When I was there, I was impressed that Westerners, especially the Left, romanticized the people and their culture and history almost beyond belief, but that’s not too surprising really.

Thais are so tolerant of the gheys that there is even much sex tourism to their country.

A little Aussie Cybergoth music is soothing for the soul. Well, if your soul is a little different than the average soul I guess. Which it kinda has to be to listen to 5 DA songs unmedicated ;)

This is disappointing to say the least and males me think less of the man. Stand up for your values......even if they are not popular.

Especially if they are not popular.

"The assistant described spending a fortune on many hours in taxis, on many days during the US visit, so that he could search NYC to find the pure and natural (and rare and expensive at the time) ingredients for Gandhi’s “humble” meals that he insisted on, to maintain his Gandhi simpleness."

As an undergraduate I took a number of courses in GPLS (General Program of Liberal Studies) whose core comsisted of seminars based on the great works of World Literature.

For some reason none of us could figure out, one of the required books was the Autobiography of Gandhi.

On the day the seminar met and was scheduled to discuss this book, we all sat apprehensively and the Prof leaned back in his chair and said "Who wants to start the discussion?" After several moments of silence he said "None of you finished reading this steaming pile of crap, did you?"

After several more moments of silence he mercifully broke the tension with: "Let's take this away as our lesson from Gandhi: Most of these supposedly "great men" of history are equally great at being pretentious bores. Gandhi was a pain in the ass."

The rest of the 90 minute class was spent discussing the upcoming World Series.

The Dalai Lama is a coward. Some years ago, he expressed the traditional Buddhist critique of homosexuality and - to his surprise - was slammed by his Western devotees, many of whom are gay. But he knows who butters his bread, and now - guess what? - he is pro-gay. He is not a wise man or a holy man, but a very shrewd pragmatist.

I find his decision to change Buddhist moral teaching very sad. I have posted on FR many times the Buddhist Position on Homosexual Acts, which was pretty much in line with the "intrinsically disordered" label given to such acts by the Catholic Church. I wondered if he and Obama wouldd discuss homosexuality at his recent WH visit since O supports gay marriage.

When did the Dalai Lama become an Episcopalian?
