Noah’s Ark could have floated with the weight of 70,000 animals inside, researchers calculate

Noah’s Ark could have floated even with two of every land animal in the world packed inside, scientists have calculated.

Although researchers are unsure if all the creatures could have squeezed into the huge vessel, they are confident it would have handled the weight of 70,000 animals without sinking.

A group of master’s students from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Leicester University studied the exact dimensions of the Ark, set out in Genesis 6:13-22.

According to The Bible, God instructed Noah to build a boat that was 300 cubits long 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high — recommending that it be constructed from gopher wood. The students averaged out the Egyptian and Hebrew cubit measurement to come up with 48 centimetres, making the Ark around 144 metres long.

Using those dimensions, the Archimedes principle of buoyancy and the approximate weight of various animals, they were surprised to discover that the Ark could have floated.

Benjamin Jordan, 21, a student from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, said: “Using the dimensions of the Ark and the density of the water, we were able to calculate its buoyancy force, which, according to Archimedes’s principle, is equal to the weight of the volume of fluid the object displaces. This meant we were then able to estimate the total mass the Ark could support before the gravitational weight would overcome the buoyancy force, causing the Ark to sink.”

MORE HERE:

Noah COULD have floated his boat, say scientists: Ark really could have coped with two of every animal:

* University of Leicester students looked into the physics of Noah’s ark

* Calculated would have been strong enough to carry two of each species

* Ark could have held equivalent of 2.15 million sheep without sinking

* ‘We’re not proving that it’s true, but the concept would definitely work,’ they added

Did they include in their calculations the additional thousands of pounds of waste & food?

Speaking of, how would they explain the animals not attacking & killing each other?

Two or Seven?

Your daily FR Bible reading for today.

From Genesis 6 and 7, New American Standard Bible
but I haved placed some words in boldface.

17 "Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 "But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 "And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 "Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 "As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them." 22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did. 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time. 2 "You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; 3 also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4 "For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made." 5 Noah did according to all that the LORD had commanded him. 6 Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth. 7 Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood. 8 Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, 9 there went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. (All text NASB.)

I just did some q&d math ... here it is ..

468’ length
78’ beam
47’ height

1.716 million cubic feet gross volume
7.48 gallons per cubic foot
12.8M gallons total volume
8# per gallon (fresh or salt?)
102.7M# carrying capacity
minus 33% because of necessary “freeboard” you can still carry 68M#

This is small ocean liner size ...

Just a few months ago you asked those same questions and I answered them. I’ll do so again, but I doubt you’ll accept the answer any more than you did then.

Ever heard of God? You know, otherwise called the Almighty? The One who created the world and everything in it? I think He could probably manage those other problems. It’s possible that He provided food as He did for the Israelites in the wilderness, who knows.

I believe the Holy Spirit covered that boat and brought peace to everyone and every thing aboard it; otherwise there WOULD have been bloodshed. I think, too, that God’s power enabled Noah and His sons to build such an enormous vessel in the first place.

First I’d heard that God “recommended” gopher wood. “Well, y’know, Noah, if it was ME, I’d go with the gopher wood, but...yah....”

Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth.
*******************************
It would have taken his family 500 years to build the craft... makes sense.

Don't forget. Two of every unclean, but SEVEN of clean animals. They walked aboard the ark two by two. Genesis 7:2-15

Did the Bible say that Noah was 100 when they started building the ark?

I hadn’t heard of “gopher” wood either ,, did a quick search on it ,, there are many theories ,, the one that sounded most plausible to me was a scribes error ,, it could have been “pitched” wood ,, you would certainly need more than a few buckets of sealant for this craft.

Yep. Larger numbers of clean animals needed for sacrificial purposes at the end, among other reasons.

Gen 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

And lest we forget, Noah only needed one cat kind, one dog kind, etc. Even today there are also such things as tigons and ligers, and there are zorses, zedonks, etc., proving they’re still able to interbreed.

There are about 900 breeds of cattle in the world, 400 breeds of dogs, 100 of cats, just to name a few common animals.

No , but he was old enough to be a clan leader so he was already old ,,, 40’s? or more at least... just commenting on the enormity of the construction project... a modern shipyard would take hundreds of workers several years to build this.,, especially as we’re talking primitive tools and probably wood peg construction.. metal would have likely been used for tools but would have been far too costly to purchase for use as fasteners.

How about the weight of the food and fresh water for 70,000 animals for 40 days?
Did that figure in the calculations?
