Gingers could become extinct due to climate change, experts warn

Scientists believe the gene that causes red hair could die out if temperatures continue to rise

Polar bears and Emperor penguins aren't the only species under threat due to climate change.

Gingers could become extinct as a result of increasingly sunny skies, experts have warned.

Scientists believe the gene that causes red hair is an evolutionary response to cloudy skies and allows inhabitants to get as much Vitamin D as possible.

But if predictions of rising temperatures and blazing sunshine across the British Isles turn out to be correct, flaming red heads could cease to exist within centuries.

While only 1% to 2% of the world’s population are ginger, in the north of the UK, where the weather tends to be more gloomy, this number is much higher.

In Scotland 650,000 (about 13% of the population) have red hair and, according to a study carried out last year, 40% of those living in Edinburgh are thought to carry the red hair/blue eye gene.

In the North and West of the UK, 29% of the population are believed to have the gene.

Dr Alistair Moffat, managing director of Galashiels-based ScotlandsDNA, said: “We think red hair in Scotland, Ireland and in the North of England is adaption to the climate.

“I think the reason for light skin and red hair is that we do not get enough sun and we have to get all the Vitamin D we can.

“If the climate is changing and it is to become more cloudy or less cloudy then this will affect the gene.

“If it was to get less cloudy and there was more sun, then yes, there would be fewer people carrying the gene.”

"Do these people read what they write?"

So by the VERY SAME REASONING, global warming will make more dark-skinned people in Scotland?

And yeah, the UK is not known for lots of sun, and never has been.

So if it's cold temps that make people red heads, how come Eskimos don't have red hair?

There’s a lot of red hair DNA in Jews. The nations that finance climate charlatans will be long extinct before descendants of red-haired King David.

And then too, maybe globul warming will take out these scientist as well. And also for your perusal and enjoyment:

The Washington Post

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.

Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by mountains of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

P. S. - I apologize, I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post; 93+ years ago.

Good find.

It reminds me of a prediction that global oil production would be totally depleted in 20 years. The report was a US Naval report from the early 1920s.

LOL - that was really funny. Kinda feel sorry for that kid but he needs to grow up and learn to deal with life’s challenges instead of whining.

As an aside, the absolute hottest woman I ever dated was a ginger....a smokin’ ginger!!!

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

The genes are far more likely to go extinct from ongoing immigration from darker skinned populations and interbreeding with locals than climate. Climate hardly has an impact on skin and hair color anymore, when we have vitamin D supplements, tanning beds and indoor climate control.

And here I thought they were referring to Ginger, Zingiber officinale, a plant imported from Fiji, China, Brazil, Hawaii, and other countries. No chance in hell, on both counts. LOL

I can picture the “experts” sitting around someone’s basement passing the bong and eating pizza. “Dude, we need something to warn the rubes about this week.” “Dude - how about red hair? It’s like going to become extinct or something because of climate change.” “Whoa dude - good one!” (inhales and holds it).

Guess they don’t have to worry, the temperature is not rising.
