Women write better code, study suggests
BBC ^ | 02/12/2016

The US researchers analysed nearly 1.4 million users of the open source program-sharing service Github.

They found that pull requests - or suggested code changes - made on the service by women were more likely to be accepted than those by men.

The paper is awaiting peer review.

...

The researchers, from the computer science departments at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and North Carolina State University, looked at around four million people who logged on to Github on a single day - 1 April 2015.

Github is an enormous developer community which does not request gender information from its 12 million users.

However the team was able to identify whether roughly 1.4m were male or female - either because it was clear from the users' profiles or because their email addresses could be matched with the Google + social network.

The researchers accepted that this was a privacy risk but said they did not intend to publish the raw data.

The team found that 78.6% of pull requests made by women were accepted compared with 74.6% of those by men.

Sign seen the where I work;

Every Support Engineer should have the heart of a code writer.
In a jar on his desk.

I imagine that if a study was done which uncovered factual data to the effect that men write better code than women, it would never see the light of day.

Do Whites create better programs than Blacks? We will never know. It would be racist to find out.

But it’s always awesome to learn that women are better than men.

Cherry picked data and arbitrary measures used by someone with a point to prove and the ability to bend the data and come up with some ‘conclusion’ to prove the ‘conclusion’ they started out with.

I see this as quite likely fact, being women write code better.

Let’s face it, women are made for clerical duties, such as writing. And number two, regarding code, they always communicate in such a way they cannot be understood, which supports the notion they communicate in code.

So there you have it, women write better code. They are naturals!

Imagine the world with all female coders.

Haha.

As we all know, most code in the world is written by women, who are willing to put in 18 hour days slaving over obscure bits of code. I have personally written about 200,000 lines of such code, but I know for sure that any woman could have written those lines better, faster and more densely than I could.

They based this conclusion on 12% of the users.

I see no way to draw such a conclusion on such an incomplete sample, in either direction.

I note that the excerpt failed to mention the relative percentages of female and male. (Or at least I failed to see them - LOL) In a self motivated group, a smaller population may well signal an already winnowed population.

But are the women willing to code for days on end, without talking to other people or even showering? I rest my case.

This has not been my experience.

One thing most of these studies never factor in is the blind eye of money. Money doesn’t care if you are white, black, orange, male, female, female with junk, male with no junk. Money doesn’t care.

If women actually made 75% of what men make for the same quality work, wouldn’t businesses overwhelmingly hire them? With H1B visas we see that quality can be lower as long a the price is cheaper. So if women make less than men for the same performance, companies would only hire women.

If women wrote superior code for the same or less pay, they would be overwhelmingly sought out by businesses.

The headline seems as earthshaking as one announcing that water is wet or blizzards can be chilly.

Men just ask women for what they want . . . Fetch me a beer, make me dinner, strip naked and come lay down on top of me, etc.

Women constantly drop hints or make suggestions which men are too dense to figure out. For instance does “I am cold” mean she wants you to turn up the heat, fetch an extra blanket, cuddle closer in bed or even plug in your natural warming rod. We’re supposed to guess and God help us if we are wrong.

Women are natural with code! Men need extensive training.

Bull$hit masquerading as a scientific study. If the conclusion had been different we would not be hearing about it.
