1906 Film of San Francisco After Quake Found at Flea Market
NBC Bay Area ^

A newspaper says a long-lost film reel with nine minutes of footage capturing San Francisco two weeks after the deadly 1906 earthquake surfaced at a flea market in the city.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday that the rare find portrays the city's post-quake devastation, including City Hall with its dome nearly destroyed.

The so called "great quake" and ensuing fire on April 18, 1906 killed thousands.

The newspaper says the nitrate film reel was shot by early filmmakers the Miles Brothers. The footage is a bookend to their most famous work ``A Trip Down Market Street,'' a 13-minute silent film shot from a cable car days before the earthquake.

Sam Rockwell Takes Home Best Supporting Actor Oscar The public will be able to view the film April 14 at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont.

it’s coming, but decidedly unchristian to wish death and destruction upon others

“A Trip Down Market Street,” or at least part of it, aired on CBS 60 Minutes a few years ago. I’m surprised to learn it’s 13 minutes in length.

That particular film was put on a train headed east the night before the earthquake and that’s why it survived.

Millennials and snowflakes would not know how to survive if their Iphones were inoperable for 24 hours. They lack any common sense or survival skills. Oh the Humanity!

Millions would die just from the stress!

My grandfather was up north mining gold when the quake hit and was one of many young men recruited to assist in recovery efforts immediately thereafter. He gave me a San Francisco cop’s billy club that he picked up while he was there. I used to carry it in my car but lost it with a bunch of other stuff during my divorce. He was a rural mail carrier during WWII and used to carry an H&R Young American .22 revolver on his route. That I still have.

I’ve watched Trip Down Market Street many times. It was shot just a few days before the quake hit. Lots of people ‘mugging’ for the camera. How many only had a couple days left? How many of the buildings you see were destroyed in the quake/fire? There’s a shot of an old man, right at the very end with a long beard—he could have been a 49er!

Thanks nickcarraway. There are really nice still photos in a book I've got around (it was one of the titles left behind when one of the elderly cousins passed), The Good Years: From 1900 To The First World War by Walter Lord. An early priority after the quake was to dig out the routes used by the cablecars, which were up and running in short order, and made the debris hauling and moving of food and water very much easier. I recall a photo showing the tumbled Greek-style columns in front of one of the public buildings -- they had been said to be stone, but were revealed to be metal rings stacked up and fastened together.

Old Testament, different dispensation, besides;

Romans 12:19, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." (Taken from Deuteronomy 32:35-36)

My mother lost a uncle in that quake; his body was never found. His widow grieved, remarried, and was lost track of.

Just before WWII, some of the family was vacationing on the Mendocino coast, and spotted him. He admitted his identity, and that he had taken advantage of the chaos to run off with his secretary, and change his name.

So this gives hope to finding the lost moon landing tapes. Of course it will take at least a hundred years, if ever.

Did Stanley Kubrik lose some of the moon landing clips he made?
