FULL TITLE: Singer's 'indecent liberties' with 14-year-old girl -- pardoned by Jimmy Carter -- get him nixed from folk music festival
An 81-year-old member of the 1960s folk group Peter, Paul and Mary has been disinvited from a music festival to be held in upstate New York this fall over his 1970 jail sentence for taking indecent liberties with a 14-year-old girl, the festival board announced Tuesday.
Peter Yarrow -- whose offense was later pardoned by former President Jimmy Carter -- was removed from the lineup at the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival. The board announced its decision Tuesday, citing negative reactions on social media to Yarrow's inclusion. The singer was to perform Sept. 8.
"When booking this artist we were not aware of news stories about an incident involving Yarrow in 1970," Colorscape's board president Melissa DeCordova told the Press & Sun-Bulletin, a newspaper based in Binghamton, N.Y.

Dylan wrote the song that you parodied, not the perv.
and Peter, Paul and Mary did a very famous cover of that Dylan song.
Back in the early 70’s Peter, Paul, and Mary did a concert at Blossom Music Center. I had my first job there as a busboy in the restaurant at the top of the hill/amphitheater lawn and my best friend had a job back stage. So I got to meet all three after the show. While Paul and Mary were sitting at the edge of the stage talking to people an signing autographs (some performers are genuinely nice people) Peter was backstage with some of the band saying “Let’s get the F out of here”. Will never forget the contrast between the first two and Peter, the major league @$$#ole of the trio.
My parents were fans, until it came out that (Peter?) forced Mary to get an abortion.
Could be true but at least these youngsters have now been informed..........
I could never figure out why after all these years Yarrow was never ostracized in society and nothing was ever said. Further proof that the "Industry" protects its own........
Maybe so. But it sure is interesting that the dragon's name is Puff, that his companion's last name is Paper, that he handles strings and sealing wax, and that he lives in Hanalei, Kauai, said to be a center of the underground pot culture in the '60's.
What the world needs now, is another folk singer...like I need a hole in my head.
He talked a 14 year old girl to masturbate him while her 16 year old sister watched. Carter who is a sick Jew hating pos thought nothing of pardoning this pos.
I have a tough time listening to Bix Beiderbecke because of his teenage molestation of a five-year-old girl. It happened before my grandma was born, Bix was dead when my grandma was a child, and the girl is likely deceased now, but its still hard to just overlook that.
How is the 14 year old act a federal crime that allowed Carter to pardon him?
The morons in NY frequently say Trump cannot pardon violations of state laws.
As with the song's title, your characterization of the song as being about 'outgrowing a child's simplistic view' may mean something innocuous to the general listeners... But the question is: Does the song's title and your characterization mean something more to the author - if he's a pedophile convicted of making naked sexual advances to a 14-year old girl?
You may believe that insinuation is never used in musical lyrics to mask forbidden meaning and you may enjoy taking the simpler view that the words meant no more to him than they did to those listeners ... But anybody who wants to make a more realistic judgment must take his pedophile criminal record into account.
Ah yes, one could almost hear the “Oh Ahhh!” hymn like singing every time the left mentioned Vidal.
Like he was some great mystic or something.
At least that’s how it looked and sounded to me.
You can read anything into anything and apparently you do.
One man's "more realistic judgment" is another man's paranoia.
"Puff" could just as easily describe a big, cuddly, harmless teddy bear.
"Paper" is just the boy's last name. He's never referred to by it alone."
"Hanalei" just happens to fit the meter of the song, and provides a suitably mysterious, exotic-sounding locale for the frolics of the lad and his fantastic pet.
Yarrow has repeatedly insisted that the song is about the boy and the dragon, and how "Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys."
You can project whatever meaning you want on the lyrics, just as you can put your own interpretation on any work of art. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
By the way, Yarrow didn’t write the lyrics.
Say what?
And I do a not so famous cover but Dylan still wrote it.
Yes, you are right. "Puff the Magic Dragon" is merely a song about a magic dragon, nothing more. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is about a girl with the sun in her eyes, and nothing sinister can be read into it. White Rabbit is a harmless tune inspired by a Lewis Carroll tale. And The Crystal Ship is only a straightforward song about a boat ride, nothing more.
And I see Jesus in a piece of toast!
