Michigan lawmakers pass bill make gas cans easier to use

LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) - Anyone who has used a gas can made after 2009 knows they aren’t very user-friendly thanks to federal regulations.

Newer gas cans have to include a barrier and automatically closing spout designed to reduce vapors. But they can be frustrating to use and result in more gas spilling than older gas cans, according to Republican State Rep. Rodney Wakeman of Saginaw Township.

A Michigan House committee passed a bill this week that would allow consumers to purchase new gas cans made in the state that are exempt from the 2009 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandates.

“Anyone who has ever used one of the newer, EPA-mandated designs knows that those nozzles aren’t helping the environment,” said Wakeman. “Too much gas is on the ground and not making it in your mower or snowblower.”

House Bill 4272 would ensure gas cans made, sold and used only in Michigan are not subject to interstate commerce laws, so they wouldn’t have to comply with EPA regulations. They could be designed without a permeation barrier and closing spout.

The bill heads to the full House for consideration. If approved there, it would require approval from the Michigan Senate before Gov. Gretchen Whitmer could decide whether to sign it into law.

“The EPA’s gas can requirements are a clear case of government regulation doing more harm than good,” Wakeman said. “It’s time for government to get out of the way and stop overcomplicating people’s lives.”

Glad to see the Michigan Legislature is focusing on important issues, and not being distracted by those silly vote fraud claims. But actually, the new gas cans have been a sad joke, and sales will be high to folks in neighboring states.

Remember to add a stabilizer to ethanol mix gasoline when you store it for long periods of time.

Oh JEEZZZ!!!

Just yesterday I was trying to put diesel into my tractor, balancing 30 pounds in one hand while trying to push the little release so the stupid spout would let the fuel flow, lost the balance and the weight broke the spout - now it's leaking all over my hand and arm but I had to hold it to get the rest of the can into the tractor.

I was cursing every environmentalist and every dimwit who believes them, and every congress critter who listens to them and makes laws based on their delusions, all of which led to me getting soaked in diesel fuel.

PLUS I guess it was part of the law that made the new gas cans have different threads so an "old style" (read, one that works) won't fit without leaking.

Unfortunately the democrats seem to have anticipated the huge on line sales this would have resulted in as the rest of the country ordered new gas cans from sources in Michigan. Hell, I'll be tempted to make the trek from Texas and fill up my truck bed - bootleg gas cans, anyone?

Gas stablizets are snake oil. Check out taryl dactyl on you tube. Hes been running a gas stablizer test for over a year. And the stablizer treated gad is no better than regular ethanol gas.

Like low flow toilets. Flush twice and waste more water. Everything a liberal touches makes it worse.

It wasn't supposed to, it was about enriching the manufacturers, lobbyist and Politicians involved with the change. A buddy gave me one of these "safety" cans a couple years ago. Piece of trashy and that is where the safety nozzle portion went. I have not found a standard pour nozzle that fits the can, probably by design as well.

I totally agree with your sentiment. Most lawmakers wouldn’t know a lawnmower from an outhouse yet they feel expert enough to pass laws to force inconveniences onto us.

Low flow shower heads...why God invented drill bits. I used to take a 3/32 bit and small channel locks with me when flying to CA to stay for a week at a time. Remove head, hand drill out holes, reinstall. Quietly changed 8 or 9 in the same hotel.

Have you watched the interview Stossel did with the lawyer that put a gas can company out of business? As if folks don’t like lawyers enough, the interview will make you furious.

Have you tried Tractor Supply? They have the kits with a different nozzle and a vent, with a cap, to make pouring even easier.

I had to borrow a gas can once, with one of those "safety" spouts.
It was safe alright. Twist and push it said. No matter how much I twisted and pushed, not a single drop came out.
Eventually I had to pour without the spout and made an unholy mess of things.
Just to learn for the next time, I went and bought a spout of the same kind, and it absolutely did not work either.

First thing I do when I buy a new showerhead is crack it open and pull the stupid flow restrictor out. I like to take quick showers and that requires some amount of water pressure :|

Most showerheads I’ve seen have a flow restrictor you can remove with pliers. No drilling needed

House Bill 4272 would ensure gas cans made, sold and used only in Michigan are not subject to interstate commerce laws ...

Federal courts say otherwise. EVERYTHING is or affects interstate commerce.

I siphon my gas through a 5/8 inch clear vinyl tube. No problem.

“Anyone who has used a gas can made after 2009 knows they aren’t very user-friendly thanks to federal regulations.”

And when the fancy spigots break or wear out, try buying one to replace it. They cost as must as a new gas can if you can find one. Might be wrong about this but I also think the pitch of the threads for the spigots are changed between cans made by different companies or at different times so the spigots are not interchangeable

Ethanol in gasoline — it does absolutely no good to society, to the environment, or to engines. It is another perfect example of “It’s time for government to get out of the way and stop overcomplicating people’s lives.”

Unfortunately, government only goes one way: more control of the minutest detail of your every day life. Here in California, we are reminded of this every time we go shopping and are asked “Would you like to BUY a bag?”
