A Day at the Beach - c.1899 | AI Enhanced Film [ 4k 60 fps]

Time travel back 122 years to the beaches of Étretat and Le Tréport in Normandy France.

Possibly filmed by Georges Méliès, the film starts at a train station as holiday makers arrive.

Before the Riviera became popular, Parisians headed to the sea fronts of Normandy. Observe the mobile beach huts for the more adventurous women to change into swimming costumes.

The huts were then rolled down to the waters edge for a secluded dip in the water. Another interesting feature are the diving boards attached to moored boats.

We don't have an exact date for this footage but judging by the various fashions and accessories this is some time between 1896 and 1906.

AI Restoration:
  1. Cleaned noise artifacts
  2. Increased frame interpolation from 15 fps to 60 fps using Rife app.
  3. Increased resolution from 240p to 4000p.
  4. Colorized using Deoldify ( notebook available on Google Colab)
  5. Created ambient soundtrack.

I was at a different beach yesterday, and this poignant video showed up in my YT stream list, really resonating with me. There are loads of these types of restored vids now from the 19th century through at least 1939, all showing largely unknown people who have for the most part laid down their burdens by now.

at not quite 2 minutes in, the synched laughter this person added to the ambient soundtrack gave an eerie lifelike quality to the entire, rather workaday video.

Be sure to change the resolution to 2160k for the best effect.

I liked the "Note" section text.
This film shows the Belgian capital Brussels in color as it was more than a century ago in 1908.

At the time Leopold II was still King of Belgium. He died one year later on 17 December 1909.

Many well-known parts of Brussels pass by the camera man's lens like the famous Stock exchange, The Jubelpark, the town hall on the Grote Markt, the cathedral, the Kings Palace, the huge building of the Palace of Justice, the woods surrounding Brussels and much more.

The film ends with a tram ride into the woods to the Musée Colonial de Tervueren, i.e. The Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervueren. It was built to showcase King Leopold II's Congo Free State in the International Exposition of 1897 [Wikipedia]. This tram line still exists: Tram 44.

It was a time when no cars were yet on the streets, only horse and carriages and early electric trams.

Today Brussels is the residence of the European Parliament that forms the centre of the cooperation of the countries of the European Union.

This film has been motion-stabilized, speed corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of Artificial Intelligence software.

Note: As usual on this channel you are requested not to make race-related comments and please stay clear from obvious comments like "everybody in this film is now dead" and "not a fat or obese person in sight". Kindly try to make more profound comments that relate to Brussel's history and what life was like in that city over a century ago. Thank you very much for helping to make this video interesting to watch and its comments a joy to read.

Source is Prelinger Archive.
The music is by Hampus Naeselius.

Who decided that old films need to be colorized now? You aren’t really restoring it, just making up colors and adding them.

Fan of the Guy Jones channel, Lumiere Brothers, etc.

Here’s one of of Paris in the 1890s with a particularly interesting clip of the 1900 Paris Exhibition moving sidewalks with slow and fast lanes...

Super impressive.
I am always struck at how folks looked and acted. Some 3specially mug for the camera.
And they are all dead now...makes it eerie.
I also enjoy the AI old photos...especially those with a touch of animation...an eye blink, a slight smile...

Everybody in this film is now dead.

It's all white people there! Why are minorities underrepresented?

It was done to make it more realistic, and I think it succeeds very well when this is done.

The brain takes in cues of all kinds, color, depth, sharpness, motion, and so on.

If those are all relatively in synch, it brings it to life. It isn’t as if they destroyed the original.

For people interested in history, it really makes the old videos less of a “curiosity” and more relatable and observational.
