The maverick engineer Nikola Tesla made his contribution in the mechanical engineering field too. Look at one of his favorite inventions — a bladeless turbine, or Tesla Turbine. The Tesla turbine had a simple, unique design, yet it was able to beat the efficiency levels of steam turbines at that time. Normal turbines are complex in design, with blades of complicated geometry and stator parts. Nikola Tesla once said the Tesla turbine is his favorite invention and he even claimed an efficiency level of 97% for this turbine. Let’s start a design journey to understand this interesting piece of technology, and towards the end we will also verify Tesla’s efficiency claim.

Spoiler Alert:

The UCLA Physics Professor loses the $10,000 bet.

I am still unconvinced that the vehicle, which has the propeller turned by the rear wheels, will continue to accelerate on its own as claimed.

It just doesn't pass the basic perpetual motion machine sniff test.

They claim that the effect can only be produced when the vehicle is moving downwind, so that means the vehicle is riding in what would appear to it to be in zero relative wind, so there would be zero wind resistance as the vehicle moves downwind powered by the propeller, which is powered by the rear wheels, which are turned by the forward thrust of the propeller, etc., etc.

I still don't buy it.

Why do some objects roll down a table faster than others? It depends on several factors but when everything else is the same, it comes down to where is the mass positioned in relation to it's center of rotation. Here's a way to get a "feel" for what is taking place, it makes it a bit easy to grasp the concept when you grab ahold and try it for yourself.

There is no claim of perpetual motion anywhere in the video by any of its participants.

No, there is no claim of perpetual motion, but the claim is that the vehicle can travel downwind faster than the wind.

The proposed action appears to be perpetual motion, especially the treadmill model built by Xyla that was the only basis on the Professor paying off the bet. In that model, the vehicle is held on a treadmill, the treadmill spins up the rear wheels which spins up the propeller, and the propeller pushes the vehicle forward on the treadmill, which in turn spins the propeller even faster, causing the vehicle to move forward faster than the treadmill is moving backwards.

The way the full scale vehicle is claimed to work is that the wind blows the vehicle forward. This forward motion turns the propeller via a chain attached to the rear wheel's axle. The propeller moves the vehicle forward faster, which in turn rotates the rear wheels faster, which turns the propeller faster, which moves the vehicle faster, etc.

Does that not sound like perpetual motion?

What the hell, is that real? I wouldn’t doubt it. Thanks to the left “professor” today has become pretty much synonymous with “moron”.

I watched a different video on this same subject a couple of months ago, and it did a better job explaining how the process worked.

Sailing ships can tack downwind faster than the wind can blow. The propeller blades are just exactly like tacking sails in how they interact with the wind. This gives the blades a velocity greater than the wind speed.

The hard part to grasp is the reference frame, but the mass of the air is still moving even if it is slower than the vehicle, and it is still imparting forward motion to the blades at greater than wind speed.

I've seen that as well, but the treadmill model, which was the only basis for the bet payoff, doesn't use this form of "rotary tacking" of the propellers. Forward thrust of the propeller moves the vehicle against the direction of the treadmill, and the wheels spin, providing more power to the propeller. No wind motion whatsoever is involved.

Oh, and you meant to say that sailing ships can tack upwind faster than the wind can blow. Which is true. Especially low drag sailing craft like catamarans, the new America's Cup flying aquafoil designs, and ice boats, can travel much faster than the wind is blowing, but do so at a quartering into the wind, not directly downwind.

This vehicle claims that it is the only wind powered vehicle that can travel downwind faster than the wind is blowing.
