A team of archaeologists, palaeozoologists, geologists, sedimentologists, archaeobotanists and palaeogeneticists from the Institute of Archaeology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, found hundreds of blades made from either radiolarite, flint or limnosilicite, in addition to bone needles and the bones of various animals in the remains of a large hearth or fire within the cave.
The researchers also found faunal and archaeobotanical remains, as well as bones from species of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), deer (Cervus elaphus) and wild horse (Equus ferus). More than a dozen bones have traces of cut marks, cracking for marrow extraction and smoothing with stone tools...
Most of the find’s date from the Palaeolithic period and indicate that the group were from the Magdalenian culture, named for the type-site of Abri de la Madeleine, a rock shelter in the South-West of France.
The Magdalenian lived in Europe between 23,000 and 14,000 years ago towards the end of the last Ice Age (which geologists call the Pleistocene epoch).
Until now, evidence for prehistoric settlement in the alpine region of the Carpathians was almost non-existent.

Very cool. But too many big words for this early in the morning. Bump for after I’ve had my coffee. ;o)
What? Did they find empty Skoal containers?
Yeah, I remember those days, it was pretty rough..
They found prehistoric crack pipes?.......................
14,000 to 23,000 years ago.
Tough time to be alive in Europe. Those years actually encompass the last Glacial Maximum.
Almost no evidence that European humans were cultivating their own food before 10,000 years ago, so staying alive meant 100% hunting and gathering for you and your family.
Any time a new group of humans wandered into your territory there was always the possibility that you would have to fight to the death to evict them.
I do not want to even think about cleanliness, food preparation, and bathroom habits.
How humans got from that life to our life in 2022 is one amazing story.
And remember we are still in a geologic age - the Quaternary characterized by cyclic continental glaciations. Key word is ‘cyclic’! So, it’s coming back, just a matter of when and puny man has nothing to with it nor can stop it.
Re: Cyclic Ice Ages
Yes, indeed.
I am so tired of fighting the completely bogus Climate War, I sometimes wish the next Ice Age would start today!
I’v been flintknapping for 30 years and attending prim tech events just as long and this is the first time I have seen the word, “radiolarite.”
There was a recent article about drought in Europe and extremely low levels of major rivers. In some places, stones in the river have been exposed that were last visible in 1619 — The Little Ice Age. They call them “hunger stones” because it’s not a good time when things are so dry.
Climate Terrorists sometimes imply that drought means Hot weather and climate change, but this is not accurate. During cold periods. Snow and ice accumulate in the north and at high altitudes. That moisture is taken out of the water cycle and the world gets drier. So, dry conditions generally mean cold conditions.
There is a good chance that we are entering a Cold period. The solution to that, probably, is more communism.
Looks like pretty stuff.
Sidebar, good article for a knapper, it may wind up posted for GGG:

Hunting and consuming protein excess to our dietary needs is what made us the hairless ape that walks erect and thinks abstractly.
When do they get to the important issues like what were their pronouns, were they heteronormative, were they diverse? Did they have a proper gender balance among their tribal leaders?
Just a guess, let the other guy Google, but possibly a rock formed from radiolaria, compressed to stone like limestone is made from many sea dwelling calcium containing mini/micro fauna.
When those people partied it was the Merry Magdalenian culture.
“Just a guess, let the other guy Google”
Yeah, I looked it up, but thanks to you for posting the definition.
A real man cave. Where is the flat screen tv and sports bar?
You mean my guess was correct? If so, I have two semesters of Geology to thank for good guessing results.
