most of these smaller papers, almost all of them, have very few orignal stories of their own except local news. they all get their "feeds" from the new york times and the networks and the wire services, and then write these articles.

why can't FR just form its own web based "newspaper". we could have "authors", who take in the same information the same way, and write their own versions of the stories in their own words. then those could serve as the basis for the discussions which follow. that's essentially what most of these smaller papers do.

I wonder if they sent the same kind of letters to DU, or Bartcop, or smirking chimp, etc.

You better believe they didn't!

I think they cannot do is sue if someone paraphrases the article in a reply and gives no title or attribution.
Since no names are mentioned, a judge is not likely to accept a case that someone read a article and then talked to someone else about it via cut and
paste.

Here is an examble of what I am talking about

Today I read in the Washington post that we live in the age of the public apology. A few examples such as “Bill Clinton's 1992 apology to his wife for his sexual infidelities“ and the Oprah Winfrey show were given but the author (Tony Judt) failed to draw any conclusion or meaning from all of this.

Next she went on to bash President Bush for not apologizing soon enough and only seeking justice and not penitence for injustices done to POWs in Iraq.

The author when on to bash Condoleezza Rice for being a “mediocre national security adviser “. At this point I skipped the rest of the article and went strait to the conclusion.

“Bush had no option but to acknowledge immediately that terrible things had been done in Iraq -- and he would be wise to make sure that he has been told and is telling the whole story. “ Yea, like Bush is a liar, some people are really stupid.

We are on the same page. There are great writers here at FR and we could compete with the best news paper in the world. This is an opportunity, to become even better! I say go for it. I'll help, I am the worst writer on the net, that is sure to stir things up.

Just like karaoke at my bar, I tell folks if yall don't sing I'm gonna, then after a couple of songs everyone want to sing just to get me off stage. LOL, works every time.

Woaw! Declining excerts?

Now this is really an abridgement of free speech. Just exactly the type of political free speech that the founders wanted to protect.

Now, I can see where they can make a court case against Jim and the site for a thread on his site that makes a partial quotation, but how, on a discussion board, can they possibly make a case against a poster, quoting part of an article in reply, to make his point in political discourse?

Perhaps, we need a thread entitled Read Any Leftist Journalistic Crap Today? and we could then post freely in reply without endangering Jim to "slap" suits being filed and the related cost to defend?

Navy Times, Army Times, etc. And the way it is now, you have to pay $150 a year to read the full newspaper (everything but that which is parroted from AP). The service times are doing everything they can to drive themselves out of business. Oh well, it's their funeral. I'll comply, wise business decisions aren't for everybody.

In this case, can we post a link to the DUmmies after they excerpt it? (just kidding)

Great idea! We'd crash their servers!

Excellent idea.
It could be an ongoing feature of FR, with separated threads; -- a forum within the forum, - without any moderation of course, as legally the FR PTB would have to be offically unaware of what was being posted..

"The Smokey Backroom of Leftist Journalistic Crap".

They also own television stations (including one here in Austin). You apply pressure by 1) staging local boycotts of all their newspapers *and* television stations and 2) documenting their hypocrisy by listing the websites who are still excerpting Gannett newspapers and forwarding such information to FR attornies.

This isn't the last shot in the war. It may just be the first.

Today their Editorial Board called for the resignation of Rumsfeld.

be sure to throw out the USA Today after you read it,...

Naa. Just throw it out to begin with.

Sorry I'll recycle it before reading. It makes a great liner for the bottom of the two parrot cages that I have.
