I just forced myself to watch it again and again and have altered what I understand about the video.
There a total of FOUR places where the time skips around.
The FIRST scene time stamp begins at 13:26:24 and runs until 13:26:27.
It then skips to the SECOND scene 2:18:33 and runs to 2:18:43. The first two are statements by Berg.
It then skips to the THIRD Scene at 2:40:33 with the Islamofascist making statements until 2:44:12 when they drag him to the floor by the hair. Berg appears calm and unconcerned but alert.
Then the time stamp suddenly skips to the FOURTH scene at 13:45:47 and appears to be the same scene where the actual beheading began. At 13:45:00 Berg appears to struggle and convulse as they start to cut but this may be the terrorists jostling. The man with the knife doing the deed is wearing a BLACK hood and the man on his back is wearing a WHITE hood. This scene runs to 13:46:33 where the head is almost fully severed.
The FIFTH scene jumps to 13:47:46 where the man in the WHITE hood appears to be completing the grisly task and holds up Berg's head as a surprise.
The apparent chronological order of occurrence in scenes APPEARS to be 2nd, 3rd, FIRST, 4th, and 5th, but truthfully, the first scene may have been made the previous day.
For some reason after the third scene, they "re-enacted" the execution and for other unknown reasons, they also "re-enacted" the lifting of the severed head.
I am a country boy and have seen animals slaughtered where their carotid artery is severed seconds after they are shot in the brain. The blood squirts out in a 5 foot stream. There is no apparent heart beat during the actual beheading as no blood squirts.
He never screams, "Please!", "No!" or anything that appears to be anything other than guttural yells.
I conclude that Nick Berg is still dead and he is in two pieces, God rest his unfortunate soul.
I've heard this explained by others as evidence of two separate cameras used, and then edited together......
They blew the video of Danny's Pearl's killing, too, according to the CIA -- in much the same way.

When a head is cut off the blood will spurt all over.
Local speculation here is he was drained of a lot of blood. Just see how pale (spaced out? passive?) he looks. So the videotaped "beheading" wouldn't be so bloody. The Islamic scum who killed him were worried about cleaning up a bloody mess and a video that would appear too violent for world opinion.
MHO is he had some blood sucked from him to make him weaker, more submissive to the final knife. Very evil sh*t !!!
Possible. They could be too stupid to set the clocks on the video cameras. But the last guy suddenly switching from a black hood to a white one is strange.
He did not resist because he thought he was among friends.
The killed him because his reckless behavior had aroused the attention of the FBI.

From your description and my own viewing of the video, one might conclude that Nick was dead, or drugged, before they sawed his head off.
There was a quantity of blood, but it was not pumping out vigorously as one would expect if the heart were still beating, so it is likely, hopefully, that he had died before the grisly beheading.

You know, I`ve watched that video over and over and blast it but I just can`t make out if anyone in the Bush administration is behind those hoods. When 911 happened and not one, but 3000 people were brutally murdered in much the same horrific way as Nick Berg, if not worse, did Nick Bergs father blame the Clinton administration for "seeing only the good" which meant basically doing nothing for 8 years, kissing the butt of the likes of Arafat and turning down Bin Laden how many times even after the first WTC attack? There`s a lesson to be learned when you try to "make good" with these animals. Sort of like trying to "make good" with sulfuric acid by drinking it.
Nick was the turkey. He thought he was working for these guys, just like dad. He was OK until the feds started snooping around. Sooner or later he would have led the FBI to some bad guys.
This 26 year old had just too many coincidental contacts with too many people in Oklahoma City, people conneted with 911, and people connected with AQs in Iraq. He was dangerous to AQ.
