The hearing of US Army Private Lynndie England, accused of abusing Iraqi detainees, began here Tuesday with the pregnant young soldier facing a possible court-martial and a maximum sentence of 38 years in a military jail.
England, 21, arrived at the hearing at Fort Bragg wearing camouflage military dress, flanked by her legal team and her mother, Terrie. She was escorted into the proceeding by several military policemen amid tight security.
"The total maximum punishment that PFC (Private First Class) England potentially could receive if she is convicted of all charges and specifications is a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances and confinement for 38 years," according to an army charge sheet.
England entered the small courtroom and sat next to her lawyers in front of the army judge, Colonel Denise Arn. Three army prosecutors were seated at an adjoining table.
The proceeding is likely to last several days and will call numerous witnesses, including army investigators and soldiers who served with England, an army reservist, in the 372nd Military Police Company at Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad.
After Arn highlighted the 19 charges, she asked the accused if she had any questions, and England replied: "No, Ma'am."

Thirty-eight years for a frat prank is a bit much...she did a stupid, and wrong thing, but it is hardly worthy of a longer jail term than most murderers get.
She deserves far longer, for the damage she has drought to the troops. Funny or not, she has not helped anything but the opposition.
38 years? Are you serious? We treat our soldiers more harshly than criminals in the US. Recently a man who raped a 12 year old girl got 60 days in jail (no doubt from a liberal judge). She is not innocent but 38 years?
38 years is outrageous.
This is freak'n ridiculous. My dad said in Korea they used to beat the living crap out of the prisoners to get info. Nobody said a thing. Now panties on the head will get you 38yrs. What have we become.
That "Just Following Orders" defense worked so well at Nuremberg.
PFC England is getting a possible 38 years for putting panties on the head of terrorists.
Sgt Akbar kills two US officers and wounds 14 and his lawyer is trying to get a mistrial on a technicality.
Something is out of whack here.
She's not going to do 38 years. But she pulled a "Kerry" which is worth more than 38 years.
I agree. people like Mr. Hacking will get less time for the crimes he committed against his wife.
While your sentiments are based in LAW, what you fail to state is the HARM caused to this country and our war effort by these "PRANKS". The fact is the MSM and the Democrats went nuts and did everything in their power to undermine the POTUS and our nation's war effort. Bringing discredit on themselves and their NATION is a serious offense and she (and others) will probably NOT get what they really deserve.
I didn't know she was pregnant.
Well, you are right. I wasn't thinking of it in that context, and you are correct.
Demented Pathetic Press Translation:
"PLEASE...PLEEEEEASE give us a reason to talk about the Prison Abuse Scandal again! PLEEEEAAAASSSSE!"
That is the most disturbing. Someone impregnated her? She looks like Danny Partridge for chrissakes!
38 years is far too much for this kind of offense for one so young.
I'd give her a BCD special and send her back home. No jail time and lost honor is sufficient.
No one was hurt. No one is dead. They don't give that much time to serial murderers in some courts in the US.
Yes, it is. While every soldier has personal responsibility for his or her actions, the majority of blame and punishment should be on her superiors who allowed and/or encouraged this type of behavior. Suitable punishment should be reduction in rank to E-1, forfeiture of half of pay for six months, 1 year in the brig, suspended, and dishonorable discharge.
Whatever happened to the traitor that tossed the grenade in his commander's tent?
The 'stuff' is all the same I guess *LOL*
