We've had a lot of new folks join up recently. Welcome aboard, this thread is a gentle reminder of some basic posting guidelines. (And for some of you old timers as well) Please read the follow, and ask any questions. We will all try to help you out.
SEARCH
If it's a breaking news topic, check breaking news first, it's probably already posted.
To avoid duplicate posts, please search before posting. Use the published article title to prevent duplicates. The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "Dan Rather Memo", start with 'Memo' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two or more keywords, in this case, try 'memo rather'. For an effective search, select 'match all words' and select 'order by post time'.
All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. This doesnt mean your one thought is a thread by itself. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest (Chat). Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic.
For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it.
Our new Bloggers & Personal forum is for:
- Posting from your blog.
- Posting from other peoples blogs.
- Posting your from your personal web site.
- Posting from other peoples personal web sites.
- Promoting your blog.
- Promoting other peoples blogs.
- Promoting your personal web site.
- Promoting your favorite web sites.
- Posting from your favorite outside forums.
- Posting from your favorite lefty forums or sites (DUh and the like).
Click on the "Bloggers & Personal" forum link on the Forums sidebar of the latest posts pages.
Hopefully, this will become a very popular forum for promoting and or discussing blogs and personal opinion/news/forum pages.

Admin Lecture Series Bump
BUT - There are also a lot of vanities from Freepers who've been here long enough to know better.
IHMO, they're only doing that because they're attention wh*res.
Thanks for addressing this. Yesterday the forum was deluged by threads from newbies, obviously triggered by the mention of FR in the media. The deluge caused the site to flow very slowly; today, thankfully, the speed is back up to normal.
I'm glad to see so many new sign-ups; hoping that by the next fundraiser, the newbies will respond generously. Of course, we've encountered more than the usual number of trolls, and still will. But it just proves the growing power of FR.
Don't forget to mention, no freestylin' with the title of the article.
We punt. It all depends upon the content. Is it well written, are there credible sources, etc. There are no hard fast rules. Some blogs are better than others.
Tell us about it!
Rolling on the Floor Laughing My Arse Off! GOOD ONE!
Duplicate!!!!!!
We've also had way too much thread pulling of articles that have similar headlines, but differing content.
Dont be a posting girlie man
Right, makes it hard to find on a search.
Or at least use the real title (then add your freestylin in parenthesis if space permits)
Welcome New FReepers!
:-)
Other pet peeve is when some blog leaks rumors of upcoming poll numbers, and it gets posted... yet when the actual real news article on those poll numbers are posted, such article is pulled and labeled a "duplicate".
I mean, the first web site to point out that the memos could be duplicated exactly with the default settings of MS Word was LGF, a blog. Shouldn't that go into the news section (which is after all called "news/ACTIVISM") instead of being lost in vanity-land?
The real problem is that "bloggers" should not be in the name of the chat forum. Blog posts can be hard news, or be thoughtful enough to belong in the news section. It should be a judgement call by FReepers/admins as to in which forum a blog post belongs (the same way certain vanity threads are allowed in the news section of FR, such as "After Action Reports" from FReeps)
THANKFULLY this is being addressed! I thought I had lost my mind over the past few days and could simply not believe all the threads I was popping into with one liners as the story posted! I just mentioned this to hubby last night and asked what in the world is going on with FR!!
I also welcome all the new people who have found this great site. It takes a while to know how it works perhaps but I honestly thought many of the old timers were being extremely patient and so I did not say anything either. But I also wondered at first it I had missed something new that was allowed as it was reckless abandon posting and reckless abandon posting replies to those threads to keep them going. UGH! :o)
Thank you!
Except Jeff Head.

You've got my attention.
We try to include a link when we pull duplicates. If you see a duplicate, it's handy for us if you include the duplicate thread url. We get about 700 abuse reports a day, give or take a hundred or so.
this has probably been asked before, but can you rig things so that a new person cant post for a week? that way maybe we all would not have to wade through all that zot stuff.
from a FR newbie. Thank you. We need help.
:)
Hey, was that you outside Madison Square Garden last week?
Remarkable likeness! ~</;o)
One thing about blogs that **I** think should be discouraged is for the poster to excerpt their own blog, just for the purpose of luring Freepers to their blogsite. We are required to do enough excerpting already, so I don't approve of bloggers doing it to acquire "hits."
JMHO.
Dang you! I was working on my welcome newbies post when you did this!
BUMP! Glad to see the rosters are growing. Set beebers to stune!
That was a lot of fun - as I recall, in the midst of a Freepathon; and they became givers.
Post it here. It would make a good reference.
You are my hero! I was slammed the other day when complaining about too many vanities taking up space that were just someone's opinion that should have been on a thread not separate.
Thank you so much for posting this -- it was getting very annoying!
Damn right you're a girl!!!
Most browsers have a preference to 'shut' off graphics. That might help.
Not exactly a newbie (2002) but I was looking for some of this the other day. THANK YOU
I remember that well J
Newbies are fine.
An easily identifable minority will run of afoul the ZOT; however, it's the ultra-lurk trolls that signed up in 1998-97 that really irk me.
A "sticky" article feature is needed so this, or something like this, could stay at the top for a period of time.
Alex, you can use the Tools/Internet Options Pull-down menu to set your browser to not load pictures. It is a menu selection that you can turn on and off...of course, I'm assuming you use Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Click the "Advanced" tab to the far right of the options box, then look under the Multimedia section for the selection that says "show pictures". Uncheck that box and viola! No more pictures.
Go back and check it to start seeing pictures again.
Other browsers have similar options, I just don't know where to find them!
FR Welcome Thread for Newbies and Lurkers.
