Freeper Sued (Inside the Beltway)
The Washington Times ^ | November 22, 2004 | John McCaslin

Posted on 11/22/2004 5:15:41 AM PST by No Longer Free State

'Freeper' sued

President Bush's 60-million-vote re-election triumph might have helped Inside the Beltway readers forget those 36 days in late 2000, when it seemed that Al Gore's squads of lawyers might deprive Mr. Bush of his narrow victory in Florida. Providing moral support for Mr. Bush during the Florida recount nightmare were members of FreeRepublic.com.

The "Freepers," as they call themselves, staged pro-Bush demonstrations across the country, from Palm Beach County to Washington, D.C., — where their chants of "Get out of Cheney's house" reportedly were loud enough to rattle Mr. Gore's nerves inside the vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory.

Now, four years later, a Freeper says he is being bankrupted by a Democrat's lawsuit over a Dec. 2, 2000, protest in Connecticut.

"I am broke and thousands of dollars in debt," writes Jim Bancroft, who led a pro-Bush rally in front of the New Haven, Conn., home of Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sen. Joe Lieberman.

At the 2000 rally, Mr. Bancroft explains, he intervened when the leader of a Democratic counterprotest rushed toward former state Sen. Tom Scott, who was speaking from the back of Mr. Bancroft's truck.

"I thought he was going to attack someone on the truck: either me or Tom," says Mr. Bancroft. He stopped the Democratic protester, who was then hustled away by police.

"Tom and I decided not to press charges for assault or trespass on my truck, and let him go. Nine months later, the man filed suit against me for assault. I am not joking — nine months later."

The result: Thousands of dollars in legal bills for Mr. Bancroft, who has been working temporary jobs since he was laid off during the telecommunications industry meltdown of 2001...

What's needed is some pro-bono legal help. I should think a counter-suit might be the way to go.

Why wasn't this dismissed, initially? This has been going on 3-4 years? What about a counter suit for wrongful charges and monetary expenses?

If you use the link above to the original thread you'll get the whole story. There's been a fundraising drive going on for about a week now to help RaceBannon with this mess. Paypal link is on the original thread.

Hi, Folks. I am not so sure publicity like this is a good thing.

Right now, we were offered a chance to sign mutual releases and let this go behind us.

While I am totally convinced of my innocence in this charge, this is the kind of thing that might make the Plaintiff dig in his heels and fight.

The issue is NOT whether I think I can win this, we have some tremendously damning evidence to present in trial, but the issue is whether I can afford to continue the fight.

The fund-raiser so far has allowed me to pay the lawyer back for fees incurred so far. I need to almost triple what I have collected to finish the fight, and then, repeat this for a countersuit to come to trial.

That is way to much money to ask people to help with...in fact, asking for what I got so far is too much.

It is too late, McCaslin wrote an accurate piece, and the word has gone out.

I am just concerned about unintended consequences that I cannot afford.

Absolutely. A little SLAP litigation would be wonderful.

Litigant is longtime AA Dem "Reverend" scammer with multiple fraud problems. Sue him, his church, his wife, anyone who encouraged him, anyone else who was with him at the rally, etc.

Plaintiffs control litigation, but counter-plaintifs can turn up the heat too.

bttt means bump to the top.

On the LATEST POSTS page, each thread that has received a response appears at the top of the page, each one that receives a response goes right to the top of the page, and when you hit REFRESH, a NEW thread is at the top.

to BUMP something, means you just responded to a thread, and that thread would appear at the top of the LATEST POSTS page...if you refresh it fast enough!

Check it out here http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/673536/posts

It's a dictionary of many of the terms FReepers use to keep newbies guessing! :)

Bump is used when someone wants to post a reply to a thread simply to "bump" it back to the top of the "Latest Posts" list so more visitors will see it. BTTT - "Back To The Top" is used interchangeably with "Bump".

Race, I wouldn't worry about the publicity. Yes, it could make the good Reverend dig his heels in and withdraw the offer to end it. However, it could work in reverse too. The bum could suddenly realize that the publicity might bring scrutiny on himself which is the last thing he'd want.

All the publicity in the world won't change the facts of the case and it has to be those very facts that prompted the mutual release to be offered. His attorney has to know his client is trash, has no case and his chances of ever getting paid by his client are slim to none.

On a lighter note:

Outside, protesters were shouting things like "Get out of Cheney's house!" Tipper pushed boomboxes to the windows, pointed them at the hecklers, and played whale sounds and nature noises. "What are we going to do?" she says now. "Leave?"

Race, just to be clear, would this release make the whole thing go away? If so, then do it! You never wanted this fight, and you certainly don't want a "Bonfire of the Vanities" situation.

I sent him a donation, but I also I hope that he can still get some pro bono help and ultimately prevail and counter-sue. Also, if the man suing him is falsely claiming that he was battered, and testifies to that in court under oath, I hope the D.A. looks hard at filing a perjury case. If Martha Stewart can be jailed for lying to officials then so can someone filing a false civil suit.

Not that it is my dog in the fight, but I agree. The newspaper article is a free countersuit for clearing your name and damaging the democrat slime machine. It is not about money, and this scammer knows how to keep from paying even if you win the case. The sooner you can get this off of your back do so.

Lawyer games are for rich men and thieves.

Take heed. Lawyers will tell you anything to "keep the meter running". Telling you to fight for what's "right". Pushing your revenge button. Don't fall for it. Get out as quickly as you can. The only "winners" are lawyers.

Sounds to me like the plaintiff doesn't want to have his deposition taken if there's a mutual release in the works.

Taking this case to trial and then suing the plaintiff's counsel for malicious prosecution may be where you have to go. Or, perhaps you'll sign mutual releases tomorrow. Who knows? And maybe you will receive enough to refund your previous expenses on this case.

In any event, please don't worry about this article hurting your chances of a mutual release. God is in control.
