Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Fox isn't doing that, but even if this happens, it's still going to be catastrophic. Just look at the size of this thing--the bands extend for what looks to be around a hundred or so miles.

Good opportunity to read the historical accounts of the Storm of 1900 which almost destroyed the island of Galveston, TX. After that storm, the City of Galveston on the island was raised about 15 feet and the Seawall was built to protect Galveston from future hurricanes.

Hey does anyone remember the band 'Katrina and the Waves' from the early 80s?

"Walkin' on Sunshine", right? (Can't believe I remember that [shudder] )

How ironic.

I have a question about the SuperDome. Isn't the dome/roof made of plastic or fabric? Is that going to hold up in heavy winds?

On Fox, they're finally talking about the danger I remember most: the snakes after the hurricane was over. Poisonous snakes. I'll bet you remember those, too.
