May Day: Brazen Act of Extortion for Amnesty
Human Events Online ^ | 2 May 2006 | Patrick J. Buchanan

Posted on 05/01/2006 11:34:36 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

It was billed as "A Day Without Immigrants."

According to its propagandists, official and media, the purpose of the May Day walkout from schools and jobs and boycott of shops and stores was to show how much immigrants contribute and how they deserve appreciation and respect, and not to be treated like criminals.

But if this was all it was about, there would have been no need to go on strike. Americans have always welcomed immigrants. They are better treated here than anywhere on earth. While most Americans believe we now need a timeout to assimilate the 36 million here and their children -- like the moratorium we had in the Roosevelt-Truman-Eisenhower-Kennedy years -- no one urges any denial of rights to legal immigrants.

What, then, was May Day really all about?

May Day was a strike against America. It was a show of force, a demonstration of raw street power to force the government of the United States into granting to 12 million illegal aliens, who have broken our laws and broken into our country, not only the full benefits of U.S. citizenship, but full citizenship.

It was brazen act of extortion to coerce Congress to grant amnesty now, and not to enforce our immigration laws or secure the Mexican border -- or to be ready for big trouble in the streets.

Congress cannot capitulate. The response of any Congress that calls itself American to such extortion should be a direct one:

"We are not intimidated. There is going to be no amnesty. The border fence goes up this summer. Those are our non-negotiable answers to your non-negotiable demands. Demonstrate all you want. We're not capitulating."

The message that would go out to the world would be electric: Congress will have said, first, that the United States will not be cowed by strikes or boycotts by law-breakers. Second, America intends to re-establish control of her border. Third, the invasion route from Mexico is going to be closed, forever.

Fourth, those who come to America henceforth will be those we invite in. And, as guests, they will behave as guests -- or they will be going back home. As for businesses that cannot get along without illegal foreign labor, if some of their CEOs are prosecuted and put to work in Arizona building that security fence, they will rapidly rediscover how to make a buck without colluding in an invasion of their country for commercial purposes.

We are at a turning point in American history. In July of 1954, President Eisenhower, discovering that illegal aliens were pouring into the Southern United States at a rate of a million a year, put in motion Operation Wetback, which halted the invasion and sent back scores of thousands of illegals to Mexico. Many more returned voluntarily.

Thirty years later, Ronald Reagan declared an amnesty for 3 million illegal aliens, conditioned on sanctions on U.S. businesses that did not cease to hire them. Following that amnesty, the flood began. Now we have 12 million illegals here.

Between 2000 and 2005, 4.5 million were caught at the border. Four million are believed to have gotten in. No one knows exactly how many. Even Bush concedes that, among the illegals, one in 12 has a criminal record. If we have 12 million illegals here now, that means the U.S. government, in dereliction of its duty, has let into this nation in the last 20 years 1 million criminals -- like Beltway sniper John Lee Malvo -- to prey on American citizens.

While almost half of all Mexicans, in a national poll, indicated a desire to move to the United States, the rest of the Third World has gotten the message. One in every 10 citizens of Central America and the Caribbean countries has already arrived. During the War on Terror, the number of those coming into the United States illegally from countries "other than Mexico" (OTM) has tripled.

These OTMs are coming from as far away as China and Iraq.

Fifteen years ago, when this writer ran in the California GOP primary against the first President Bush, calling for a border fence along the crucial 70 miles where illegals were massing and coming in by the thousands every day, there were 3 million to 4 million illegals here.

Nothing was done. There are now 12 million. If these 12 million are amnestied and the border fence is not built along all 2,000 miles, the next amnesty will be for 20 million or 30 million.

During the "Generals' Revolt," when half a dozen senior officers called for the firing of Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, President Bush saw a challenge to his authority and had to throw it back. If Congress does not throw back this challenge, if Congress now capitulates to this extortion, America should start shopping for a new Congress in November -- an American Congress.

Funny how the folks around here who call Bush "Jorge" let Reagan off scott-free. I haven't seen any posts criticizing him for opening the floodgates--no, we had no illegals coming through before Bush got into office.

Of course, the fact is that immigration is DOWN under Bush...but I guess we've all decided to just trust the MSM on this issue, for some bizarre reason.

And the Dems sit by, silent, waiting...

There was a Hispanic gal on Fox News that is against the protests and illegals.

She was saying how these illegals are just like any other criminal - "Give me that or I'll do something bad to you". She was asked if this would turn to violence. She said, she hated to say it, but yes - she thought it would.

And then went on to say "the citizens of this country will reach a point where they won't tolerate this type of illegal behavior any more" (or something to that effect).

In fact, it was amnesty and the lack of enforcement which caused the problem we have. Before amnesty, illegals worked along the border and when they had earned enough money to have a better life in Mexico, they went home. After amnesty, the only place they checked employers was along the border so the illegals had to go north.

I believe it - illegals are a slap in the face to everyone who emigrated to America legitimately.

I really think we CAN do something now, and recover from this mess. But I think many people looking for a cause are pickign the wrong target. Tossing the Republicans out instead of fighting them to do the right thing is playing right into the hands of the libs; anyone who thinks they will do better is delusional. And yes, they CAN do a whole lot worse; I live in Massachusetts where people basically want to PAY for illegals and their kids....ack, I don't want to get into that tonight, not again...but kicking 'em out in November will deliver power to folks who wanna do just that. I can see Harry Reid on election night telling those "who helped make this great victory" that the dems "will not forget you," and millions of illegals--who are calling for Bush's impeachment--cheering.

My eyes started to glaze over when I came to this rather stupid sentence.

Great article. Sadly,we have gutless wonders in both parties. Either stop this illegal invasion now or bend over.

I am afraid we are teaching socialism from day care through PHD's. How many teachers have held a real job?

'how many teachers have held a real job?', reminds me of a saying, "those who can do, those who can't teach".

Their number is actually their biggest weakeness! I posted this on another blog but feel that it fits here as well.

Interestingly enough, the Bureau of Labor Statistic's (www.bls.gov) report for March 2006 showed unemployment at 4.7%, or 7 million people. That's 7,000,000 people who could be working but aren't.

The statistics being thrown around about illegal workers is 11 million, or simply put there are 11,000,000 jobs that are taken by unqualified people (all other qualification aside, except the overriding one of legal status - i.e.- first question is CAN we hire you, and NOT do we want to hire you!).

By simply enforcing the immigration laws we could wipe out unemployment in America today! By simply doing WHAT'S RIGHT, we could become a 0% unemployment country!!

But, you say, but what about the other 4 millions jobs that would have no one to do them?? What would those employers do??

Simple answer to a simple question, in fact there are two answers to that one question:

A percentage of those jobs would simply disappear if the company had to actually obey the law in their hiring practices (competitors take note, hiring of illegals is UNFAIR COMPETITION and it is your duty to your stock holders and your investors to ensure your competition is operating within the law!!).

Secondly, unemployment statistics can be a bit misleading since after you've been unemployed for a very long period of time you simply drop off the count. Yes, this is true. That also means that there are more people in need of jobs then are counted in the 7,000,000 number that the Labor Department published.

There is no reason to expect that the simple enforcement of the immigration laws would do anything but make the US stronger nationally and economically.

What American wouldn’t want that??

What American wouldn’t want that??

Any American business owner who has built cheap labor into his or her business plan.

Any American with child care needs unable to afford a qualified babysitter or au pair.

Any American who enjoys the luxury of lawn care, car detailing or house cleaning at discount rates.

Durasell,

I would actually expect that even those guys would want to make the US stronger nationally and economically.

But, hiring illegals isn't just a criminal problem, it's also a problem of business ethics and fair competition.

A business owner who builds cheap labor into his business plan by hiring illegal workers is the kind of guy that needs to be caught in the act and smacked down real hard!

That guy is stealing business from his competitors, it's larceny no matter how you cut it! Doing crime only gets you into doing more crime and breaking more laws.

Do you think a criminal like that should be allowed to run free?? Do the rights of criminal outweigh the rights of the victims??

We have 11 million criminals, and at least 7 million victims in the unemployed, add in unfair competiton and the other side effects of this and you'll see that you and I end up being the victims in the long run.

The sad part is these guys don't need to be criminals, they just need to go home and return in a manner precribed by law.

This protest today was about flouting the law, it's not about civil disobedience or civil rights. It's about getting your hand caught in the cookie jar and then insisting you have the right to take a cookie whenever you want! If your daughter or son did this, how would you react??

How long will you cling to the sinking ship? Why NOT toss out Republicans who won't do anything to put us back on course? By continuing to vote for politicians who allow 'rights' to people who crashed the gate, we are 'rewarding' wrong behavior just as they are rewarding the wrong behavior of the gate crashers.

Did any of your ancestors or family members fight in America's War for Independence? (Remember 'No Taxation Without Representation!' that was one part of it?) Do you have any mementos you could give to me to trample upon? That's what you're permitting when you vote for those who would give amnesty to invaders. The honor of our forefathers having fought hard for freedom from oppression is worth nothing if America is reduced to the socialism that is entering through the open borders with these so-called 'immigrants'. They are robbing us of our heritage!

Arasina,

At least with the Republicans there WAS a debate on this topic!!

Look at the California legislature which is mostly Democrats, they passed a resolution supporting the march of illegals!! No debate, just give them the keys to the country!

Until the other parties gain enough support to get more than a token number of seats in the goverment you are stuck with Democrats or Republicans, and especially on this issue with the Republicans there's contructive debate going on. We wouldn't get that from a goverment controlled by Democrats (actually not that we WOULDN'T, we DIDN'T here in California - need I say more?)!

How long will you cling to the sinking ship?

Until it sinks into the cement heads of those who would give this country over to the Democrats because of a hissy fit.

Why NOT toss out Republicans who won't do anything to put us back on course?

Cutting immigration by 24% since 2000 isn't nothing. Immigration was at record-highs--legal and illegal--under Clinton. If you want to go back to that, I have to question either your ability to research for yourself or your loyalties.

By continuing to vote for politicians who allow 'rights' to people who crashed the gate, we are 'rewarding' wrong behavior just as they are rewarding the wrong behavior of the gate crashers.

By that definition I should not have voted for Reagan twice.

Did any of your ancestors or family members fight in America's War for Independence?

No. I guess that means I'm a commie to you folks.

(Remember 'No Taxation Without Representation!' that was one part of it?) Do you have any mementos you could give to me to trample upon? That's what you're permitting when you vote for those who would give amnesty to invaders.

Uh...what?

The honor of our forefathers having fought hard for freedom from oppression is worth nothing if America is reduced to the socialism that is entering through the open borders with these so-called 'immigrants'. They are robbing us of our heritage!

And giving all the power to the Democrats will accelerate this. Pressuring Republicans in office is the only thing that will slow it.

I'm still waiting for one of you people to answer the following:

The Democrats take over the House and Senate in 2006, and they do what, exactly, to improve the situation?

Remember, ignorance of the FACTS of the Bush immigration record is no excuse.

So please, can the "revolutionary" rhetoric and answer the hard questions you folks never, ever answer: What's going to happen in a Democrat 2007-onward what will somehow make all of this better?

I've known some of those guys who hire illegal aliens as part of their business plan. Most of them are not bad guys. The ones in manufacturing are getting mercilessly squeezed by Chinese competition -- which often directly copies their products. In turn, their customers -- retailers -- are getting the snot squeezed out of them by Wal-Mart. The ones that I know aren't guys buying beach front condos in Hawaii with the salary savings. They're fight for their businesses.

That cheap labor is now a necessity for their survival.

That said, manufacturing can be done with American labor. Alden shoes, which are made entirely in the U.S., uses only "legal Americans." They make an excellent shoe, but their market is quite limited as $350 to $600 or so is at the upper range or out of reach of a lot of people.
