I agree with you. The President of the United States is a political leader, not a religious leader. It is a very, very bad precedent for the President, any President, to characterize this as a nation of prayer.
Bush would win points with me if he said this is a nation of individual rights...a term now in disuse among politicians and intellectuals. Jimmah started calling it "human rights" and ever since, few politicians defend "individual rights".
Prayer is hardly a fundamental political concept. Rights are. But I don't think most politicians including Bush understand John Locke's ideas about natural rights anymore. The universities have done an excellent job of obliterating America's founding principles.
You obviously have problems with George Washington too.....

-Business and economic policies leading to the lowest unemployment since the 1950's
-Beginning to bring us back to being a culture of life through honoring the sanctity of life and the unborn (not to mention the sanctity of marriage)
-Bringing our military back from near death under the America-hating xlintons
-Leading a revolutionary foreign policy that has opened up the Middle East to democracy and freedom that they have never had before
-Assembling one of the most qualified cabinets in history and leading one of the most moral and noble administrations in history
-Ending the death tax
-Revitalizing small business
-Increasing home ownership
And THAT's just for starters.

Madam, I make no accusations about the depth or sincerety of Mr. Bush's faith, and I am sorry that you assumed that I had. It is simply my observation that when the President appears to be in trouble with his "base" (and that would include not just religious conservatives, but Republicans and conservatives of all stripes), his press people tend to flood the media with stories about prayer breakfasts, interfaith services and religious messages.
I certainly believe in the power of prayer, but I also believe that sometimes on this earth we must (as John Kennedy's speechwriter once wrote) truly make God's work our own. Or to put it somewhat indelicately, less praying, and more action!

Exactly. I'm all for prayer, but Bush needs to put his bible down and start enforcing the laws of this country. He took an oath to up hold the law and he has failed in that oath.

This statement is categorically untrue.
You can backtrack all you want, and claim you weren't doing what you WERE doing or saying what you WERE saying, but you made a completely false statement about the President's faith to be 'cute' and that says a whole lot about YOU, and not him.
His faith doesn't change one bit from day to day, nor does his declaration of that faith. You made a false statement (based on ignorance, I presume) and an apology is in order.
As for action, the President lives his faith every single day as well.
If you're not paying attention, that also is your problem and not his. And compounding it by making false statements on a public forum only makes it worse.

Madam, I just looked at your "bio", and I noticed that you believe that God Almighty appointed George W. Bush to be our President. That explains a lot about your attitude. So I must ask, is God directing President Bush to grant amnesty to millions of people who have violated our laws and our borders? I ask that because even the President's defenders (e.g. Rush Limbaugh) say that the President and Carl Rove have a made a "political calculation" where his stand on illegal immigration is concerned. Did God direct President Bush to work with Teddy Kennedy on a bloated educational budget that still makes no provision to help parents who send their kids to parochial schools (hint: I don't think so)? Did God tell President Bush to allow the Government of Dubai to oversee operations at our seaports?
I hope that God answers President Bush's prayers for wisdom, and that his Administration ends on a positive note. I believe that the President has good intentions, but my Mom always said "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions". Right now we need some leadership. One other question, Madam, just where do you get off telling me what I'm thinking?

Pray for him, Stony. Don't condemn him when you can't possibly know what's in his soul. Don't make judgements that you cannot possibly make because of his diplomatic words, or your own political bias.
