Seriously though, the fence is not incompatable with a reasonable guest-worker program. Speaking from a purely dirty politics point of view, he can take the high road on this along the lines of "The people have spoken and I won't go against them" and still be able to get a solid guest worker program and immigration enforcement that does not involve mines, machine guns or box cars packed with illegals.

I hear the dam breaking. This fence will succeed in preventing border-jumping in urban areas like the San Diego fence has done, and will make it easier to isolate the illegals to remote areas where we can better concentrate personnel and UV minitoring. Additionally I think that vehicle barriers will be placed alongside a much wider border area.

This is a good beginning, and I am cautiously optimistic...

Doesn't the government use a bidding process to tender a contract to a private company to first assess and engineer the fence and then another private contractor(s) to build the fence(s)?

Is this the same country that built the Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal, that built the Empire State building in about 14 months? The one that was at nearly zero aircraft produce before WWII and was producing hundreds of thousands of aircraft within 3 years? The one that mounted the Normandy invasion? Is this the country that built the interstate highway system? That put a man on the moon in the span of one decade's effort?

Will someone please tell me what all this nonsense about "we can't build a fence/wall/whatever it takes" to keep our border secure? What the heck is going on here? I know some people disagree, but this is the same weak, "can't do" attitude that is the primary reason (besides politicians) why there aren't two beautiful, reinforced, taller and grander World Trade Center towers standing alongside that awful hole in Manhattan.

They don't THINK. They KNOW. Look at the alarming number of people who think this is a good thing. You're right. It is about amnesty. Anything else is just thrown out to accomplish that ultimate goal. Rush proved that today when he announced the Senate had decided not to implement anything until after amnesty.

I agree 100%...I live 7 miles north of the border and this is a huge step in the right direction. The bottom-line is that if the fence they build works to stop the crossings, then the pressure to extend it will be unstoppable!

Actally it's not all that smart to build a fence that long. Many desolate rural areas would be much better served using a combination of patrols, video monitoring and sensors.
