Remember September 11, 2001 as documented LIVE on Free Republic

As the 5th anniversary of the cowardly and tragic attack on America approaches, let us look back and remember as if we were there.

Many people were here on FR, reporting events with lightning speed, with unique insights, with analytical accuracy, with sadness, with anger.

Here are some links to the "live" threads from 9/11/01 here on FR. For those of you who have never seen them, it is like watching a piece of history unfold before you, in the familiar style of FR. For those who have seen before but not in a long time, this will be a good memory. For those who have revisited these threads many times over the years, and have continued to post on them, please continue to participate.

This can also be a great place and time for people to share their unique and special 9/11 stories...where they were, who was there, who they knew...who they lost.

We all lost 3000+ fellow Americans that day. As said many times here on FR....

NEVER FORGET! ALWAYS REMEMBER!

Wow and thanks. Reading the quotes as fast as I could brought up all the horror and terror I felt on that unbelieveable day. Glad that so many FReepers were interlinked through FR and able to be connected.

All this was before I joined FR, but it is such an example of what a huge community FR is and how important each member is to the others.

Okay, I'm tearing up now, gotta quit posting.

Thanks again NewLand and all. We must help people recall September 11, 2001 and the events which followed.

Do you remember where you were that day?

At the office. The C level executives had a prive lounge area with a TV in it. All the admins went to sit and watch, especially would FR would freeze up.

I remember my boss going to meeting like nothing had happened.

Lord those threads, I'll cry like a baby again and then have a stuffed head and red eyes tomorrow.

Thanks HO. It is true, and I'm glad that as a more recent "member", you have a chance to see and experience that tragic day thru the eyes of your fellow FReepers.

We must help people recall September 11, 2001 and the events which followed.

Exactly. We must.

It was a day, that for me was not much different than any other day in my recent life. I got up early, ate cereal for breakfast, stayed in the shower longer than I should have and went to work the way I normally do. I got upset at the same things that always made me upset, and got excited about the kinds of things that made me excited. I walked through the day the way I always have.

Until Michelle A. showed up in my doorway, life was pretty much the same as it had been. At 9:20 AM EST, things changed. Everything else was the same as it had been before. The sun was shining brightly with a nice breeze, Canadian Geese took to the air as they ever did.

But my whole life changed at that moment. A rubicon was crossed, and it marked a division in the landscape of my life as clearly and unequivocally as a land mass is divided by an ocean on a map. When I crossed that ocean, I closed my door and was unable to look back at the land I had left behind me, because I knew it was in the past, and the voyage ahead of me was going to be very different than the one I left behind.

This was an email I wrote to myself on that day. I keep it in my inbox.

Amazing when you look back, isn't it?

Amazing how many people then, and now, have already sold their very soul, just to look good 'in the world'.

A moment that changed all of us. Those who choose to ignore that will perish.

Don't lose that email. It's priceless. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Where were you when it happened

Working at a little Christian Book and Gift shop. The owner's husband telephoned and told us to turn on the TV. It was 11 something and we were already seeing a rebroadcast(I think). I cannot remember exactly what time the towers fell. After 9/11 the store started to lose business because the senior citizens from the center next door stopped spending ANY money. They thought it was a World War.

I was in Chicago for my industry's largest annual convention. We were staying at The Fairmount Hotel...very nice.

My wife and I first met at The Fairmount 6 years before, well, actually in a car out front as we went on our first date (a blind date with her sister and husband, a friend of mine). She and our two young daughters (3 and 1 at the time) were in Chicago area staying at her Mom's.

That night we had planned a special evening together as a rememberence and celebration.

That morning, I had a breakfast meeting with a VP of our company who lived and worked in Israel. I only had 30 minutes for the breakfast meeting, then had to get to McCormick Place by 8:00 a.m. Central for our daily meeting before the show.

We finished our discussion at 7:30 a.m. Central, then took a taxi together to McCormick. It was an absolutely beutiful day...crystal clear, just like in NYC.

Our conversation went something like this:

ME: Have you been in Chicago before
HIM: Yes, the last time I was here, the Bulls won the championship.
ME: I just read a headline in the newspaper that Michael Jordan may be coming back to the NBA, maybe The Bulls.
HIM: Isn't that something...in your country, your headlines are about Michael Jordan, basketball, etc. In my country, the headlines are always about the latest terrorist bombing.

ME: Thank God, we don't have to worry about that here.

The time was approximately 7:50 a.m. Central...almost to the minute when the first plane hit the first tower.

I was working as a church custodian and the office manager hunted me up and told about the first plane hitting the Tower. I went upstairs to the 3rd floor and got the TV in the youth room tuned in just about the time the second plane hit. I literally froze. I couldn't move, couldn't breath, all I could hear was my heart beating. My first thoughts were what am I going to do if this spreads to here? I was in one town and the rest of my family, husband and 3 kids were 35 miles north at school. I finished up just what I had to do at work and went home. I loaded both 22's and locked the doors and prayed hard. Everyone finally got home and we ate sandwiches and watched the news until very late.
We didn't unload the guns for a month afterward.

What a compelling story. I got chills picturing you loading those guns and locking the doors.

Thanks.

Well...maybe not for all.

Liberals do not seem to understand the world changed on that day.

I'm from New York. I know those towers. Saw them everyday.

Same here.

I lived in Dover, DE when this happened, within a mile of DAFB where the reamins from the Pentagon came..

I remember watching the towers being built, I used the subway station in them often when I worked on Wall Street and lifted many a drink in many of the pubs in and around them.

The silence in Dover got to me.......we were all used to the sounds of the C-5's and other aircraft coming in and out on a regular basis.....so the silence was horrible. When I heard the choppers.........they were coming from the Pentagon - I didn't know that at the time, but I did know it- they were coming to the morgue.

True. The fact that they don't realize it is why they are going loony.

They are out of sync with reality.
