PARADISE, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A man apparently targeting young girls walked into a one-room Amish schoolhouse and shot three students to death before killing himself, police said Monday. Seven others were wounded in the attack.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young female victims, and this is close to his residence, that's the only reason we can figure that he went to the school," said Comm. Jeffrey Miller, Pennsylvania State Police.

The shooting took place at Wolf Rock School in Paradise, a school run by the Amish community with about 27 students in grades 1 through 8.

One of the children died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said.

The gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, 32, was a truck driver, said Miller. He was not Amish. He had three children, and left several notes for his family "along the lines of suicide notes," Miller said.

Police said he had barricaded himself in the schoolhouse two-by-four and two-by-six pieces of lumber.

Fifteen male students between the ages of six and 13 were released from the school, Miller said.

At least five young girls with gunshot wounds were taken to area hospitals, a spokeswoman said.

Gunman let boys go

Miller said that during the attack, Roberts apparently told students to line up in front of the blackboard. He began to tie his female captives' feet together. Then he let the boys in the classroom leave.

Miller said Roberts also allowed an adult female who was pregnant to leave and three other adult females who had infant children with them.

I live in the area and drive truck. 20 years ago I had a job picking up milk from mainly Amish farms. I had
very good relationship with the farmers and their families. This shooter worked for a company that picks up milk from farms that can't meet the stringent rules of federal regulators. The milk that he picks up goes to factories to be made into cheese.

The Amish are wonderful people that interact with neighbors and are the first to jump in and help anyone that needs help. They do not deserve this.

Pray for the victims and their families and neighbors.

I was just in Lancaster on Saturday and Sunday we drove from NYC and it is so beautiful there and the people are so pleasant. I pray for the families of the children.

That is a gross overreaction. You daughter is at much bigger risk for death being driven too or from school.

Just because something seems HUGE in the media, does not mean it is actually a HUGE problem. If you really want to do yourself a favor, buy an old 20/20 episode called "Are we scaring ourselves to death?" from John Stossell. There is also a book on the topic by H. Aaron Cohl. Both are available at Amazon. (I haven't read the book)

Until 1986, I lived about 2 miles from the crime scene. It is just a very quiet, rural scene that could be existing in 1950.
The Amish are very fine people that really live their beliefs. The are not people that push their beliefs on anyone. They believe that they give their testimony by example.
They will be fine and will draw their members together to grieve.
