Warsaw ghetto uprising anniversary
19.04.2007
Today is the 64th anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, which broke out on April 19, 1943 and went on thru mid-May the same year.
The ghetto established by the Germans in Warsaw in 1940 was home to about 4 hundred thousand Jews. Because of massive deportations of Jews to the Nazi death camps, but also by famine, diseases and the inhuman conditions in the overcrowded district, the number of inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto continued to drop.
The April 1943 uprising was an attempt to resist the annihilation of the ghetto by the Nazi forces. It was the first act of anti-Nazi resistance of this kind in the occupied Europe. At the moment of the outbreak, about 70 thousand people were living in the closed district.
Several hundred participants of the uprising, supported by other residents of Warsaw fought against four thousand German soldiers who had artillery and armor.
As a result, the whole ghetto was burned down and the ruins where blown up. Around 7 thousand Jews were killed and 50 thousand were transported to the death camp in Treblinka. The number of casualties on the German side is not known, but estimated at 3 hundred dead and several thousand wounded.
Just below the steps, in the photo above, you can see a path around the mound. This path is an outline of the actual building which stood at Mila 18. As you can see by the size of the mound, the building was very small. The photo above was taken from the street which is at right angles to Mila street. The actual entrance to the house at number 18 Mila street was formerly in the spot shown in the photo below. The house was set very close to the street. A row of trees has been planted where the sidewalk in front of the house used to be.
Memorial at Mila 18 honors Jewish heroes of Warsaw
Pictured above is the memorial stone to the Jewish heroes who died in the Warsaw Ghetto in a house at Mila 18 during the resistance against the SS in April and May 1943. It sits on top of a mound of rubble, where the house at this address once stood; it is turned slightly toward Mila street which is to the left. The street is still named Mila, but #18 is no longer an address there.
The last hold-outs in the Warsaw Ghetto resistance were 120 Jewish fighters who were hiding in a bunker in the house at #18 on Mila Street, which intersects with Zamenhofa Street. On May 8, 1943 after the fighting between SS soldiers and the Jews had been going on for almost three weeks, the Mila 18 bunker was attacked by the SS. For two hours, Ukrainian and Latvian SS soldiers bombarded the entrance to the house, and then threw tear gas into the bunker to force the occupants out. Unwilling to surrender, many of the resistance fighters took their own lives. Mordechai Anielewicz, the leader of the Warsaw resistance, died that day in the Mila 18 bunker, along with 100 of his comrades.
A tragic, yet beautiful thread, Lizol. Thanks.
“For two hours, Ukrainian and Latvian SS soldiers”
This is not true - Kremlin propaganda, Lots of these people fought against the Communists with the Germans but to suggest they were SS troops is a lie.
The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto resisted the Nazis longer than the French Army did.
Mila 18 was one of the most profound books I have ever read.
My Polish grandmother lost her entire family to the ovens.
Sadly, never forget no longer has meaning to many jewish people in the United States.
One of my favorite books.

I read it as a very young man and read again every couple of years.
The book changed my life.
The concept of "evil" was crystalized in my mind

So, CBS has been pulling the wool over everyones eyes
for longer than we would like to admit........sad very sad
After a day like April 16th. I once again find my faith tested.
Thank you for your condolences. There are times that try my soul and I’m sure I am not alone in that. I do struggle.
When reading of the atrocities around the world I begin to wonder. Watching Rwanda was shocking in the extreme. No one raised their voice, no one raised their fist against the murderers.
But then, a certain president did apologyze. Guess that makes it okay.
I ramble, sorry.
I like the sound of that: Uprising.
I loathe disinformation.
*BUMP*!
Yes, amazing. Thank you for posting these wonderful photographs.
I understand that plans were discovered buried in a metal box somewhere in Warsaw after the war, which provided many clues to rebuilding the city.
