The war on terror is a bigger deal than illegal immigration. The fact that our open border also allows terrorists in should make closing it a priority. My biggest sin in all this was to have voted for Bush. My bad.

That said, comments on FR attacking illegals as being on a level with urban gangsters and/or terrorists are based either on xenophobia or bigotry. I can’t tell which. I only know there is an awful lot of it.

You can't possibly be unaware of some of the less attractive aspects of Mexican culture, such as the ingrained corruption, both at the local level and the political level. Corruption exists in the US, but the big difference is that we don't accept it, culturally. We are offended by it, and want to see it stamped out and punished whenever it is found, whereas Mexicans simply sigh and say that's the way it is. In addition, Mexico is currently on the verge of falling under the complete control of drug gangs. Their own military is routinely caught working for drug cartels.

Now we have a situation in which Mexicans, primarily, are coming into the US virtually unchecked. In addition to the organized criminals, we have many who simply are looking to improve their lives, but end up contributing to the creation of entire communities within the US that are indistinguishable from Mexico, complete with the level of corruption that Mexico is famous for. Unfortunately, these insular communities also leave these illegals vulnerable to the gangs for a couple of reasons: 1) illegals know next to nothing about American society and the resources that are available to them to combat crime. Instead, they operate as they would in Mexico, paying off who they must, stashing large amounts of cash in jars they bury out back, and generally failing to do what would be considered a civic duty to help fight crime and corruption. 2) For those who are familiar with the US criminal justice system, they may still be afraid to call them in for fear of deportation.

The very accusation of bigotry when it comes to this illegal immigration question is a bait and switch. Bigotry against the Mexican culture, because of its tolerance toward corruption, is completely justifiable. Americans should be making an effort not to import third world problems. However, those that accuse Americans of bigotry because of their resistance to the Mexicanization of the US do so by coloring the cultural conflict as a racial one. So, those of us who would resist the overwhelming cultural influence of a backward country like Mexico are accused of actually hating the racial component of the illegals, rather than the true thing we despise, which is the cultural element that the illegals are bringing with them. That is either through a lack of reasoning ability, or it is an outright lie in order to shut down the resistance to the wholesale transformation of the US into a third world country.

“Where once the xenophobes could advocate forced sterilization and eugenics

Yup, that’s us “xenophobes” (anyone who disagrees with her) alright.”

I was just hoping we could make a distinction by making illegals “illegal, and legal imigrants legal. But now you’re telling me I’ve got to get out my pitchfork and snippers? Like we see that everyday.

I had to laugh when I just saw Jeff Gordon’s racing suit with the word “Nomex”. For just a moment, I thought he was making a statement about illegal immigration. Turns out that is just the maker of the flame retardent suit.

Nomex is a type of flame resistant nylon material invented by Dupont. In addition to racers, you can find people wearing Nomex coveralls at refineries and other hazardous facilities around the country.

“Some people just don’t like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans.”

Unfortunately, that’s exactly the impression many have. And who’s to blame for that? the media?

Right out of the "big book of activist strategy", these comments are intentionally designed to demonize and marginalize all those who oppose illegal immigration.

Frankly I don't care where they come from or what language they speak. If they came here without following our immigration laws, pay no taxes, and use public services while at the same time refusing to do anything to fit into our culture while waving their home nation's flag in our faces, then yes, I have a problem with that.

>> Good luck with that deportation. Fifteen or twenty million takes a lot of buses.

If you did it the RIGHT way you wouldn’t need to deport 20 million people (or whatever the UNKNOWN number of illegals is). Here’s how:

a) Make employment of an illegal alien a felony crime with mandatory prison time. Make this felony apply to *every manager* up the chain, INCLUDING THE CEO, whether or not he or she “knew about” the employee.

b) Put some government money in whatever machinery (SSAN database, document verification service, whatever) would help employers document their employees. Make this machinery secure, reliable, and available to employers. An employer who uses THIS method to verify the status of their employees is protected from a), even if (somehow) an illegal employee slips through the cracks.

c) Pass another law that absolutely, unequivocally denies any form of lawsuit or tort case against an employer in their efforts to ascertain the immigration status of their employees.

d) Any city that declares itself a sanctuary loses ALL federal funding of every sort, period!

e) ENFORCE the above laws, and other existing immigration laws.

I guarantee you, the major employers (Tyson, the big janatorial firms, the big construction firms) will FIRE all their illegals. The CEOs do NOT want to go to prison... they WILL find and get rid of illegal employees. If there are any recalcitrants, make an example of ‘em — end of story!

WITHOUT JOBS, the illegals will deport THEMSELVES! Why do you think they’re here?

(Of course we don’t have the will to do this, but it WOULD work. Too many entire industries love their cheap labor, subsidized by hardworking taxpaying American CITIZENS. Frankly, I like the thought of a few of these SOBs that got rich through criminal behavior spending hard time in prison.)

Oh yeah, and NO ANCHOR BABIES. Retroactively.

I would hope that our opinion on this vital matter is not irrelevant. I would add, that my anger is with the illegal invaders, not with the people wanting to enter our country via legal means.

Bless you. Politics is the art of the possible, and what really needs doing besides a border fence, is not possible.

Linda Chavez hyperbole: “No debate necessary! If you’re not for this bill, you’re RACIST.”

Michael Chertoff: “No debate necessary! If you’re not for this bill, you’re a hateful rightwinger who wants to EXECUTE Mexicans!”

John McCain: “No debate necessary! I and my elitist colleagues know more about amnesty (oops! I mean immigration!) than any of you $%^*&^! If you’re not for this bill you’re a %&^%$ @%^&* !!!!!!!”

Hmmm. Anyone see any similarities between immigration reform and the other bu11$hit-du-jour, global warming?

“NO DEBATE NECESSARY!!!”

Well said. I’m tired of all the name-calling by those who want to “third-worldize” the US. It’s not bigotry to want to prevent your country (or your neighborhood) from turning into a toilet.

Where's Ms Chavez's call for fairness -- under the 14th Amendment? Why can't Americans be excused for document fraud, ID theft? Just pay a few books and walk out of that prison, have those charges dismissed my fellow Americans. What a deal!

Ms Chavez is an America hater. :)
