AdvertismentArizona is the home state for John McCain, but Fred Thompson is the strongest GOP Presidential candidate in the state at this time.
A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that Thompson leads Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by seventeen percentage points, 51% to 34%. Thompson will be formally announcing his candidacy this week.
Rudy Giuliani, who leads the polls for the Republican Presidential nomination, leads Clinton by eleven points, 49% to 38%. McCain has a ten-point edge over Clinton, 46% to 36%. With McCain as the GOP candidate, 15% of Arizona voters say theyd select a third party option. Mitt Romney is the weakest of the GOP candidates in Arizona but still leads Clinton by seven points, 46% to 39%.
The immigration issue which caused McCain trouble earlier in the summer is still powerful in his home state. Seventy percent (70%) of Arizona voters say it is Very Important to improve border enforcement and reduce illegal immigration. McCain was a visible advocate of the Senate comprehensive reform legislation which failed due to strong public opposition.
When it comes to legalizing the status of those already in the country illegally, just 20% consider that a Very Important issue.
Only 13% of Arizona voters believe that the federal government is doing enough to reduce illegal immigration. Eighty-two percent (82%) favor forcing employers to fire workers with false identification documents. Two-thirds (68%) say that people looking to rent an apartment should also be required to show identification and prove they are in the United States legally. These views are similar to those held by voters nationwide and are also similar to results found in our last Arizona poll, conducted in June.
With those attitudes on immigration, its not surprising that McCains favorable in his home state remain weak. Forty-eight percent (48%) of voters express a favorable opinion of their senior Senator while 49% offer an unfavorable opinion. Thats little changed from June when 47% had a favorable opinion of McCain.
In Arizona, Thompson is viewed favorably by 58%, Giuliani by 57%, Romney by 49%, and Clinton by 41%.
Rasmussen Reports has recently released state polling results in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon, Colorado, New York, Illinois and New Hampshire.
In Primary Polls, Clinton leads all Democrats in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida.
The Republican Primary picture is more muddled. Romney leads in New Hampshire, Thompson leads in South Carolina, and Giuliani is on top in Florida.
It’s no secret that John McCain isn’t very popular in his home state anymore. The people here feel betrayed by his open border policies.
Ouch.

As the ignorant sector of our population become aware of the damage and cost of illegal immigration, alot more pols will be looking for legitimate work elsewhere. Maybe picking lettuce with those they supported.....
Hey Johnny,
Keep preaching that immigration reform. It’s very helpful to Fred!
Maybe the folks in AZ will boot Johnny out of the Senate as well.
This news is very bad news for Johnny. He will have to actually show up in AZ from time to time now. Not visiting as much with his buddy, Goober Graham in South Carolina.
You’re right. We don’t like McCain. He has betrayed us BIG TIME.
Bruce Jacobs on KFYI calls McCain Mr, Lettuce.
Dog bites man story.
Thompson can win his state... Hunter, Romney, McCain and Juliani couldn’t say the same.
I wonder how a Thompson vs Edwards race would go?
Incredible change considering that he garnered almost 77% of the vote in 2004.
As an “outsider” living in Arizona, I think it is so wrong that he duped his voters in such a hugely blatant way. They voted him in with confidence, and he has sold them down the river. And to be honest, his temper tantrums are really freaky. Even if it weren’t for his ridiculous pandering, I wouldn’t have voted for him. He seems hugely unstable.
I wonder how a Thompson vs Edwards race would go?
LOLOL!!!.....Methinks,rather badly for Edwards, even if he DOES have better hair.
McCain has a 10-point lead over Hillary in AZ.
McCain needs a new line of work
