A California-based immigration reform organization is supporting the decision by the mayor of Simi Valley to bill a church almost $40,000 for harboring an illegal alien to cover the cost for police presence during a protest.
For more than a year Mexican national Elvira Arellano made national news as she was holed up inside a Chicago church in order to avoid deportation by immigration authorities. Arellano finally left the church, fled to California, and was deported back to Mexico. Now another illegal, identified only as "Lilliana," has been given sanctuary at United Church of Christ in Simi Valley, California.
In response, an immigration reform group, known as Save Our State. organized a three-day protest outside the church -- forcing the city to send police officers to keep the peace. But instead of billing the protestors, Simi Valley Mayor Paul Miller sent the nearly $40,000 bill to the church, calling the congregation irresponsible for harboring an illegal alien.
Save our State spokeswoman Chelene Nightingale says the mayor made the right call. "This pastor is the one who opted to have this criminal in her church, therefore I personally feel -- as do others -- that she should pay for harboring a criminal. She's aiding and abetting," says Nightingale.
It is unfortunate, says the group spokeswoman, that the American Civil Liberties Union has come to the defense of the church and its illegal alien visitor, prompting the mayor to hold off on the bill. "The ACLU can pose quite a bit of problems for a city," she says.
Nightingale says her organization intends to meet with the mayor and return to the church for another protest.
If you are talking about the WBC I say yes they ought to be billed for the extra police officers that are called in because of their disgusting protests. I don’t think towns ought to even grant them permits to protest... Hitting the WBC anyway we can is a great idea IMHO. I think they hate losing any money.
Hell yes. Why not?

h.b., surely you mean the wackos from Kansas, not the church that happens to be the venue of the protested Funeral?
“Church shelters illegal alien, gets $40K bill for police protection during protest”
LOL! GOOD!
YEAH!!
Sounds like a hell of a deal. Where can you get round the clock protection for only $40K??
Someone better tell Cardinal Mahony about this! His law-breaking policies could cost him some money and he’s just finished paying out that $660 million.
Good.
Excellent!
I meant should the Church holding funeral pay the bill. Not the church from Kansas. The question I am asking is, who should pay the bill the ones protesting or the ones being protested? While I don’t agree with what the church is doing is this reason of enough to ask them the bill. We here could find ourselves at the wrong end of this plan if we were protesting in someplace like San Francisco and it were left up to their polical views.

Goodbye sanctuary cities!
This is a novel approach I hadn’t heard of before.
I don’t want to speak too quickly, but the church was wrong in this case. I have not, by the way, given money to any Christian organization for many years now because of this sort of lunacy. I don’t know who is more delusional, the Republicans, who think that illegals are going to vote for their party one day, or the gringo Christian church potentates, who think that illegals will fill up their pews and replenish their coffers.

I'm baaack! Thanks for putting up with my connection problems. After excoriating Comcast by phone yesterday and still being told I'd have to wait until Thursday for service, all of a sudden my transmission rates began to improve. By shortly after noon I was screaming fast again. Huh! They must have figured something out. Anyway, I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude, and have no intention of canceling Thursday's appointment. He can check my connections while here to insure there's nothing wrong locally.

A second illegal entry after a prior deportation proceeding and deportation order is no longer an “adminstrative matter” but an actual federal felony.
Not unless the church was endorsing the whackos, harboring them, feeding them, and generally creating the conditions that caused the police to become involved.
