DefenseLink (and others) ^ | 10/3/07

Posted on 10/03/2007 6:13:42 PM PDT by TFFKAMM

Freepers,

Just learned that an acquaintance of mine was killed while serving with the US Army in Iraq. Here's the DoD release:

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. Robert T. Ayres III, 23, of Los Angeles, died Sept. 29 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.

Please pray for SGT Ayres' soul, and for the peace and healing of his family and friends. Thank you.

O Lord, how it grieves us to lose one of our own-—one so young and full of promise. We mourn the loss of this patriot and pray for his soul, that he might be received into Your heavenly kingdom and hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Comfort his family members and all who knew him, and may they feel the prayers of a grateful nation. We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, who died so that we may have eternal life. Amen.

Dear God,

He was one of us, a part of me, a part of my world.

He was a son, a husband, a father, a friend and brother among us.

He cared and gave not just his best, but his life.

Now he is gone
Ripped out of this world
So senselessly.

Yet, I trust that You hold him in Your loving arms.

I trust You have taken him into Your loving heart
And the wounds he received in this life
Are healed now, in Your Holy Presence.

Help his family accept this loss.
Remind them of the joy his living left in their hearts.

Help me accept what seems like such a terrible waste.
Remind me that there are forces at work that I may not understand.

Reach into my heart and fill me with Your Presence.
Remind me he is not so far away
For he is with You
And You are ever here, with me,
In every beat of my heart.

Thank You for this life.
Thank You that I knew this man,
That I cared about him
And that I miss him.

Thank You that somehow, through this sorrow,
I am brought closer to You
And to what is most important in my life.

Amen.

To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord

No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
Just divine embrace, eternal light
To the Mansions of the Lord.

Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard though the angels sleep
Through the ages safely keep
The Mansions of the Lord.

More about this American hero, SGT Robert T. Ayres III:

Soldier who grew up in Los Osos dies in Iraq

U.S. Army Sgt. Robert T. Ayres III, 23, who grew up in Los Osos, was killed Sept. 29 while serving in Iraq. He died from wounds suffered during an attack on his unit in Baghdad.

His mother, Michelle Ayres, a 19-year resident of Los Osos, said her son enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school in Southern California in 2003.

“He was a happy, funny and just a really sweet boy,” Ayres said. “He was fighting for the country and the people that he loved.”

Ayres was born July 26, 1984, in Santa Monica. He moved with his mother, twin brother and sister to Los Osos in 1988.

...Ayres was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany.

During their sporadic phone calls, Michelle Ayres said she remembered sharing stories of her son’s childhood. He’d tell her not to worry about him.

“He would never tell me that he was getting shot at,” she said. “Instead, he would say ‘Mommy, I love you.’ ”

Even from afar, Robert Ayres could still make her laugh. They’d tell each other to hang up after their conversations, but after 20 minutes, Michelle Ayres said, they’d still be on the phone.

As they joked back and forth, she remembered her son saying that he loved her.

“I can feel how badly he wanted to come home and just be a little kid again,” she said. “Now every time I get sad, I can hear him.”

I was able to witness the first part of the PGR mission today.
Tomorrow, he will be memorialized and buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery.
