After first debate, Thompson disappears from campaign trail, cancels event in NH

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mitt Romney was in Michigan, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada and then went back to Michigan. Rudy Giuliani visited Florida, Michigan, South Carolina, Alabama, Washington and New Hampshire. John McCain went from Michigan to Iowa to New Hampshire.

But where was Fred, as in Fred Thompson?

Besides participating in his first presidential debate in Michigan last Tuesday, Thompson was missing from the campaign trail. The former Tennessee senator and star of NBC's “Law & Order” was scheduled to be in New Hampshire this weekend, but canceled.

New Hampshire voters noticed.

“He's a late entry. That will probably hurt him,” said Geri Gormley, of Bow, who visited with McCain but remains uncommitted. “We're grass roots. Candidates come up and pick our brains, one on one. We had (Barack) Obama's staff come to our door today. That's good strategy.”

Thompson was supposed to visit a fundraising breakfast for Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta on Friday. But on Thursday afternoon, Guinta's campaign e-mailed guests to let them know it wasn't happening. The note cited “scheduling conflicts for the senator.”

I don't get it. If he is running, why isn't he enthusiastic about campaigning? Thompson needs to put his heart into this and get down to business if he is serious about becoming President. He better to *un-conflict* his schedule and do what he says he will do.

The latest poll in New Hampshire shows Romney widening his lead slightly (woot!) and Thompson losing traction.

It’s that “lazy” thing he’s notorious for. Sounds to me he just doesn’t like to pander. These people just want someone to tell them what they want to hear.

He blew off the debate as well and went to the Leno show. Perhaps he figures NH is lost and he is resting up for another fight.

Let Fred be Fred or whatever that slogan is because he has already said he isn’t going to dance to anyones tune.

NH isn’t exactly a bastion of conservativism, anyway!

Were the hell is New Hampton and who cares.

Here come the flames from the tiny little suburb of New Hampshire.

I can understand why he’s writing off NH. But you’d think he’d campaign more in Fla.

My earlier theory is that he was really running for VP, and with VP as his target, he did not need to campaign as aggressively as the front-runners. But you’ve got to show at least that you can deliver something to the ticket, and the best way to do that is to get out there and campaign aggressively. I don’t think he’s shown that he can do that yet.

Those who believed Fred Thompson was the answer to the Gop primary woes made a serious error in judgement. He didn’t clarify the field, he confused it even more.

he is resting up for another fight.

"resting"? See, that is a problem considering he's done damn little heavy lifting so far. If he can't take the pace of the election process then he will collapse in month six as POTUS.

What's truly amazing is the way so many Freepers fell so hard for Fred, with so little in the man's resume to back it up.

Not very different from the way all of DU fell for Bev Harris. And the hangover is going to be almost as much fun to watch.

Mind you, I don't dislike Fred and I would vote for him if he were the GOP candidate, but in so many ways he strikes me as Bob Dole redux.

How do you know he wasn't?

I don't know that he isn't. But he certainly doesn't give the impression that he is enthusiastic, which is itself important.

I like the guy. I might even vote for him in the primaries. But perceptions are important, and I haven't seen the hunger, the fire in the belly that a GOP candidate will need to win next year.

It's early yet, there's still time, but he'll have to show it eventually if he really wants the job.

Thompson is all over the place, raising money. I know; I saw him in Ft. Worth (where I happily gave him money).

This is just more BS from the MSM.

That's really the one thing I have to complain about. Is he running or is he just making a show of it? It irritates me because he's the best of the front runners.

The newspaper suggested Thompson speak to McCain, “who knows a thing or two about winning New Hampshire primaries. You can't do it if you don't show up,” the editorial said.

Oh really Mr. Newspaperman? How did that NH win work out for Senator McCain in 2000? Uhh-huh. Thanks for playing.

Your state's primary is becoming less and less relevant. Expect it to be a non-factor in 10 years.

How exiting! If you're lucky, Mitt's win in New Hampshire will mean as much as John McCain's did in 2000. Go Mitt!!!

Every article on Republicans is a hit-piece... today, Thompson's getting a bevy of them.

He may be thinking NH is a lost cause between Mitt and Rudy?? He will win the South and where he likely will focus.
