Romney's "Faith of his Fathers" - His Church leaders speak out about Jesus Christ.

After Thursdays speech by Romney on 'Faith in America', I thought I would share what he did not, nor should he have. This is what he believes about Jesus Christ. It's the statement by the leaders proclaimed to the world at the turn of the millennium, in January 2000.

==========================================================================

The Living Christ: The testimony of the Apostles of the LDS Church.

As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.

He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was the creator of the earth. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), yet was despised for it. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow His example. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He taught the truths of eternity, the reality of our premortal existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential for the sons and daughters of God in the life to come.

He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.

We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.

He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father” (D&C 110:3–4).

Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—

“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22–24).

We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood and His Church have been restored upon the earth—“built upon the foundation of … apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone” (Ephesians 2:20).

We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to our works and the desires of our hearts.

We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.

At this time of year as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let me share with you what Romney believes about the Savior. Lot's of bad things are said about the LDS faith, most of it innacurate or out of context. Here is a brief statement of the words of the apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This was stated at the turn of the millennium in 2000, but is worth repeating in light of all the Mitt Romney scuttlebutt as of late. Merry Christmas to all and may the peace Christ fill your homes this season.

Sugar coating lDS doesn’t change the fact that it is not Christian. The Bible was rewritten because it was “flawed” according to Mormons. One of those “flaws” was polygamy. Even though the New Testament is CLEAR on one woman for one man for marriage, the founder of this cult insisted on polygamy that is still practiced today by some. Other LDS churches stopped in when the U.S. Supreme Court deemed polygamy UNCHRISTIAN and made it against the law.

The Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Covenant are more important than the “flawed” Bible in the Mormon religion. Trying to whitewash these facts is ridiculous.

BTW, people aren’t turning away from Mitt because of his “religion” - they don’t like his LIBERAL leanings and flip-flops. If he wants to make himself into a “victim” because he wants to be a Mormon - so be it! He id NOT addressing the real reasons people don’t want him as their next President. No sympathy for a liberal trying to buy the election here ... don’t want Mitt as my next President.

Merry Christmas to you too. This will not be a debate by me, but an expression of my love for the savior, and what I can only assume to me a belief held by Mitt as well.

Feel free to disagree, I won’t be arguing here, just posting this. Life is too busy and short.

God Bless

“We bare testimony, as his duly ordained Apostles”

Except they aren’t my Apostles, I consider them more like corporate board of directors, so their Testimony has no inspirational weight. And the D&C means nothing to me as a scripture. So while many of the sentiments can be acknowledged, it is the same old attempt to slide the camel’s nose under the tent.

It's good and well people of LDS love Jesus, but what most of you fail to realize is Mormon precepts are antithetical to what Jesus taught about who he is and what he expects from his inherited children.

And as far as your charlatanific prophet J, Smith goes, he can not be God's prophet because his prophecies have failed and the Mormon Church knows this!

Ignor your tainted history and ever changing outrageous claims of the Mormon church at your own peril.

I always smile when I see the non-Hebrew word "Jehovah." It is a concoction dating from the 16th Century, caused by people ignorant of scribal notations in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Scriptures. The "Name" is unpronouncable in modern Hebrew, and the scribal notes (which are called "kerev kativ") are vowel notations added between the 6th and 10th Century to tell the reader that they should not attempt to pronouce the Name as it is written, but instead to say aloud the Hebrew word for "L-rd." Igorance not only led people to say the word out loud, they completely misread the letters in the Name, which are only four, a Yod, a Hay, a Vav, and a Hay (and without the vowels, the pronunciation is lost). There are no letters that make up the nonsensical "Jehovah." Just another dubious part of many English translations, and obviously the "Book of Mormon."

Of course, all anyone had to do was ask a Jewish sofer [scribe], they could have told them right away that there is no such name as "Jehovah" - nor is there any way to pronouce such a word in Hebrew with the four letters supplied in the Name.

It sounds just like any other Christian manifesto until you get to this part, the fly in the ointment. This is "doctrine of demons" stuff.

I don’t think there’s time now to look for the perfect candidate. What Mitt said about religion satisfied me.

I know Mormonism is off the wall, but I like Mitt Romney compared to the other candidates, and this upcoming election is going to be choosing the least of the evils. That’s probably what most elections have been about.

You’re absolutely right!

I find it even more disgusting that Mitt is using his “religion” as the reason people don’t want him for President. It’s not about his cultist religion - it’s all about his liberal leanings and flip-flops.

If people think Mormonism is “Christian” then they don’t know their Bible.

Yes, they conveniently forget about Joseph Smith’s revelation about pologomy as being the way to go since the Bible is in err. Smith is a false prophet. Mormonism has been evolving over time ... and it’s not in a Christian direction.

As a non-Christian, I'm curious about why this is a problem. Isn't Christ supposed to appear to Christians?

> ...the U.S. Supreme Court deemed polygamy UNCHRISTIAN and made it against the law.

It did? Gee, I had no idea that the US Supreme Court was authorized to rule on matters of Christian dogma. We at FR would object strenuously if it tried to. Moreover, SCOTUS doesn't make things legal or illegal, it rules on the constitutionality of laws made by the legislative bodies (e.g. Congress). Again, we here at FR are -against- courts legislating from the bench, right?

Instead, I thought that to become a state, Utah had to officially ban polygamy in its state constitution:

...During the 1870s and 1880s, laws were passed to punish polygamists, and in the 1890 Manifesto, the LDS Church banned polygamy. When Utah applied for statehood again, it was accepted. One of the conditions for granting Utah statehood was that a ban on polygamy be written into the state constitution. This was a condition required of other western states that were admitted into the Union later. Statehood was officially granted on January 4, 1896... [from the Wikipedia page on Utah]
Indeed, the SCOTUS ruling on polygamy specifically said it was NOT about religious belief, but only the practice:
... 1879 unanimous Supreme Court Reynolds v. United States decision declared that polygamy was not protected by the Constitution, based on the longstanding legal principle that "laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinions, they may with practices..." [Wikipedia page on polygamy]
It says nothing about SCOTUS deeming polygamy un-Christian.

So, can you provide a link, please, to an official source (e.g. a SCOTUS ruling) that describes how and when "the U.S. Supreme Court deemed polygamy UNCHRISTIAN and made it against the law"? Thanks.

No, he isn't supposed to appear to Christians. The Bible says that many would come in the last days saying they were the Christ, and would appear as angels. Believers were warned to not pay any attention to the counterfeit Christs as they were demons masquerading as "Christ".

Check the U.S. Supreme Court decision on this. Clearly you don’t know what you are talking about.

It was CLEARLY aimed at Mormons openly practicing pologomy. Chritsians didn’t want pologomy in the U.S.. That is WHY pologomy is against the law, however Mormaons in Utah, wink at that and pologomy is still practiced by many Mormons.
