Duncan Hunter Endorses Mike Huckabee
National Review Online ^ | 1-23-08 | Byron York

Posted on 01/23/2008 12:29:02 PM PST by TitansAFC

This was a surprise. From the Hunter statement:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter. "Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China's emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America‚s industrial base."

"Along with these issues of national security, border enforcement and protecting the U.S. industrial base, I see another quality of Mike Huckabee's candidacy that compels my endorsement. Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity. I saw that character over the last year of campaigning and was greatly impressed. The other Republican candidates have many strengths and I wish them all well. My personal choice is Mike Huckabee," Hunter concluded.

RUSH: You can love your guy. Just don't call him conservative.

Hilarious the way "El Rushbo" considers himself the final arbiter of who and who does not pass the conservative litmus test! Today, on "The Michael Medved Show", Medved had Peter Robinson, speechwriter for Ronald Reagan as his guest. Robinson said there is no way Reagan would have been going on a "RINO hunt" after the Republican candidates the way Rush and others have been doing here. Robinson knew Reagan a lot better than Rush ever did, I think it is safe to say.

Rush has no credibility anymore since he became a national embarrassment. His "doom and gloom" pessimism is as un-Reagan-like as it comes.

I like Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and to a lesser extent Mike Pence of Indiana. I would say Coburn is the purest politician we have.

Coburn just endorsed McCrazy! The biggest backer of shamnesty.

Rush said the other day that amnesty was the biggest pork bill of all time.

Pence is for a guest worker program. Guest worker programs are not the answer. They just create another form of slave labor.

I'll take Hunter or his recommendation.

In essence, even folks who support Huckabee will have to agree that the two men have huge, huge policy differences, which is the reason why the endorsement is so puzzling.

Hunter's WIFE likes Huckabee.
Never underestimate the Schriver effect.

Australia is more socialist and has a stronger left wing than the U.S. does, far as I know.

They just elected a left winger for PM.

Numbers USA gives Mitt a good rating on past record on illegal immigration and Huckabee a bad rating.

I’m very concerned about the border and the trade mess we’re in with China. I suspect these are the sort of things Hunter and Huckabee have talked about.

I just found this thread and started from the back -- yours is a comment with a high probability of truth to it.

"Even Hunter was schnookered."

If so, it does bring his judgment into question.

Lots of things are divisive issues. Picking Bork or Roberts for the Supreme Court were divisive.

Yes, but that wasn't Huckabee's point. The advantage of Guantanamo was to be outside of U.S. jurisdiction for military prisoners. Now that the court ruled that it's not the case, it doesn't matter where we put them. Guantanamo no longer serves its purpose, and is a liability due to bad public image.

To use your Bork analogy, let's say that there were 20 great conservative judicial nominations, but one, for no relevant reason has a very poor public image. Would you choose the one just to stick it to the other side or coose one of the other 20? Which one is politically smarter?

The NE liberal puke twins are going to lose!

I certainly hope so. I cannot believe how many FReepers are willing to vote for gun-grabbing baby killers. Such a disappointment. Jim Robinson must be shaking his head in disbelief.

[McCain, Huck] Those are the top two of four very bad choices. Pick one!

I will pick NONE. I will vote for Keyes because he is the last with conservative credentials. If he drops out, I will write in Hunter.

Huckabee’s long terrible record on illegal immigration shows that Huckabee would sign an Amnesty for the 30 million illegals here now and then allow those 30 million to bring into the U.S. 100 million of their relatives.

Bringing in this many 3rd world illegals would not only destroy the United States economically but culturally and in every way possible.

This is the plan of these Marxists like Huckabee, McCain , Hillary and the Democrats. They know that these millions of illegals will vote for Democrats and for socialism. So they import voters from the 3rd world. This is cultural Marxism as well as economic Marxism .

And we will all be starving just like in every socialist state like the USSR, Eastern Europe, N Korea, Cuba.

Numbers USA gives Mitt a good rating on past record on illegal immigration and Huckabee a bad rating.
http://www.betterimmigration.com/candidates/2006/prez2008.html

Hunter was my first choice because he seemed to be strong on illegal immigration. Now that he endorsed Huckabee I feel I made a mistake and that Hunter is either an idiot, totally ignorant, very gullible, a liar, or all of the above. And I would not support Hunter under any circumstances now just like I won’t support Huckabee the Huckster.

Huckabee throughout his many years as governor of Arkansas never once did any of the things he SAYS he is for now but he did do the opposite of what he says he is for now.

Huckabee is for illegal aliens and for Amnesty as his record shows. He never did anything in his nearly 10 years or so as governor to stop illegal immigrants but he did give them in-state tuition and wanted to give them the vote and many more examples.

Huckabee was never for a fair tax when he was governor but Huckabee did raise the income and sales tax for a net increase of 500 million in taxes.

This Huckster is slick he knows that it would take a constitutional amendment to repeal the income tax which would never pass so we’ll be stuck with another tax , a national income tax on top of the high progressive income tax and the Huckster will just tell conservatives he tried while giving as a new 23% tax

Numbers USA gives Mitt a good rating on past record on illegal immigration and Huckabee a bad rating.

And people feared that Fred would support McPain. I guess there is a reason Hunter never made it out of the starting blocks.

What are these “huge policy differences” you see, pogo, and how do they compare with these affinities?:

-— Huckabee is the only one I recall who has signed a “no amnesty” pledge and has a strong plan for border/immigration enforcement.

-— Huckabee is the ONLY one who seems to share any of Hunter’s concerns for maintaining national economic as well as political sovereignty (free trade that is actually free of foreign manipulation).

-— Both men are dedicated pro-lifers and pro-marriage patriots.

-— Huckabee has committed to building up our overstretched military.
