KATHERINE JENERETTE GRADUATES from US ARMY AIRBORNE SCHOOL

katherine jenerette

Former North Myrtle Beach Planning Commissioner, U.S. Army Lieutenant Katherine Jenerette recently graduated from the U.S. Army's Airborne school at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Airborne officers are considered to be among the Army's most valuable combat officers. Every member of the Rangers and Special Forces - two of the Army's most elite corps - is airborne qualified.

Information about the Airborne school states: Throughout the fast-moving course of instruction, mental alertness and physical conditioning are emphasized and Airborne School is designed for those who possess the desire, motivation and courage to join the elite fraternity known as "Paratroopers." It is one of the most physically demanding yet rewarding courses in the US Army. It takes a special kind of person to volunteer for this assignment; someone with an unflinching nerve and a spirit of adventure.

Having successfully survived jump school, Jenerette graduated and was awarded her Airborne wings at a ceremony in Ft. Benning last week. In the military, Airborne wings are a mark of courage, daring and skill.

Jenerette is a U.S. Army veteran of the Persian Gulf War Operation Desert Storm and she has served as a Field Representative for the 1st Congressional District, South Carolina. She currently is a Commissioned Officer serving in the U.S. Army Reserve and as an Army Paratrooper she is assigned to the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, N.C.

I stand in awe of anyone that makes it through this phase. It is a grueling and dangerous course...I know, not because I've ever served, but my grandson whom I raised = (Does that make me a “Typical White Woman?” = got his wings there and went on to be chosen for the elite 173rd AIRBORNE = “Sky Soldiers” = into a RRT, and is serving in the isolated Korengal of the Kunar Province.

I'm trying to get a slot - even though heights scare the living daylights out of me.

My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts.

First I have to say that I am am old school guy who does not believe in women in front line units. Second I have to say that I would be proud to serve with you. Getting your wings at 39 takes sand. Many "men" would not make it. I spent four weeks at the John F. Kennedy School for Wayward Boys when I was 19 and it damn near killed me.

THANK YOU for your service and giving the young ladies of today a great role model to look up to. Heaven knows they need it.

Congratulations !!!!

We’d looked forward to our son being there now, post-PsyOp (enlisted) at Ft. Bragg, but he suffered a temporary physical disqualification and jump school is delayed, if not off the plate forever.

Good luck in all you do, and thank you for your service.
