To move away from the simplistic, here is a website of stats upon stats for the school where this particular student decided to beat up her teacher.

Reginald F. Lewis (#419)

It is one-sixth of a totally out-of-control 3000 student warehouse that was divided up about 5 years ago in an attempt to make school a bit more personal for the students.

My post was in regard to insinuation that ALL public schools are like this one. The fact that this one is a hell hole says nothing about other public schools, and should not be used as an example of all other public school.

I had one student who was pulled from school to *home school* only to return a year later and tell me that she had not been home schooled, but had spent the year babysitting for her Mom’s new baby. She was way behind, ended up getting pregnant that year and never finished high school. Didn’t get married either. So, I guess she did learn SOMETHING in her year off. Shall I tout her as a typical homeschooler? No, I wouldn’t do that because I realize that one story does not show the entire picture.

Those "small learning communities" actually make things worse. The peer group solidarity becomes even more powerful and these kids know no loyalty to anyone but their friends. We have students on tracks, and it actually gives them a semi-gang mentality right away.

"A Track sucks!!!"

"F&*^ you, you B!$#&, C track sucks!!!"

“More to the point. When they “graduate” from such a school they will still be illiterate and innumerate. A waste of time and money.”

I’ve been reading through the comments on this thread, and something remains unsaid:

You can’t mill good lumber from bad timber.

Yes, there are some implications and innuendo. I mean exactly what I say.

Check out the website for Baltimore City Public School system, and click on the link for school websites. There are about 25 links there. Then go back and click on Alphabetical listing of all schools. There must be close to 100 on the second list.

The 25 schools with websites are the best in the city, and are providing good educations in general. The other 75 are marginal to awful.

The citizens of Maryland promoted the mayor of Baltimore to the governorship. So much for accountability!

http://www.baltimorecityschools.org/

For three-quarters of the public schools not even to have a functioning website in 2008 is a good indication of the attitude of too many employees of the system: “It’s not my job.”

The schools with websites have principals and parents who are interested and involved.

Then again, having kids non-tracked, whose ambition for the day is to ruin a learning environment for any child in the room who may actually have a desire to learn, doesn't do much for the transference of knowledge.

This is a perfect opportunity for you to show us just how great a teacher you really are. Volunteer to take the little misguided waif in and make her a solid citizen.

This child needs a boot camp, reform school, or prison (Actually, I am reminded of Anne Sullivan who had to "domesticate" Helen Keller before she could teach her anything.) What this child really needs would put a teacher in jail if a teacher in a school or homeschool setting applied it. The child is still on the feral stage and needs to be tamed.

Heck I will even spring for the bus ticket.

I do believe that in this post I have suggested that Christians rescue the "good" children who would benefit from a Christian school. As explained in the above paragraph the rest need boot camp, reform school, or prison. These feral children are not in a position to benefit from schooling at this point. In the setting of boot camp, reform school, or prison, yes, Christians could work to help them. "Schooling" though would be of little value at this point, in my opinion.

What do you say, ready to put your money where your mouth is?

My husband and I DO put our **money** on the line. We give 10% of our income in tithing, and an additional 1% to our church scholarship fund. If every Christian in this nation would do that every child in our nation ( possible) the world could enjoy a conservative Christian education, if their parents wanted it.

In addition to tithing and the 1% to the scholarship fund, we also give 1% to the missionary fund. Bring families to Christ strengthens these families and indirectly makes it more likely that the child will be academically successful.

In a truely free market in education, private schools would arrise that would best meet that needs of these wooden headed children and get the most possible out of them.

Surely, if a high school diploma is to have any value, not everyone should be able to get one. I think a 30% or more failure rate is completely reasonable in the quest for a high school diploma.

So, of course, this has nothing to do with black culture in America. Thug life; thug behavior.

Clean up your act, black America. You’re turning our collective stomachs...........still.

No, I don’t mean they are tracked by ability, they are just broken up into tracks to accommodate the overflow of students. Then further scheduled to be in the same group from class to class. They become like a pack of wolves, moving en masse from one teacher to another, and teachers are seen now as mere entertainers (combined with waitresses whose job, they seem to think, is to supply extra pencils at the bark of an order.) It’s really dreadful sometimes. I often wish I’d just become an accountant or something.

This is one school with very involved parents. It is located near where I shop and the kids are all bright-eyed and smiling. It is easy to see that they enjoy their school day. Many of these students come from the inner city, but they are motivated to get on the learning bandwagon. It is obvious that they have future achievement on their minds. They also wear uniforms of khaki below the waist and navy blue tops.

Middle School
In middle school, Roland Park serves not only students in its residential zone but gifted students who come from across the City to attend one of two magnet programs. Since 1994, the Ingenuity Program at Roland Park has provided advanced instruction in all subject areas with a special emphasis on science and mathematics. For more information about this program, visit the Ingenuity Project.

Additionally, Roland Park offers an Advanced Academics magnet program that provides students with an advanced curricula and special emphasis on the liberal arts. For example, Shakespeare’s plays and Homer’s Odyssey are standard fare for these students who are also offered classes in the fine arts. For more information about this program, contact the school directly. For all Roland Park students, foreign language is offered beginning in kindergarten and includes Spanish, French, and Latin.

As a result of superb teaching and challenging curricula, 87% of the school’s middle school students move on to college preparatory citywide high schools or private schools.

What happens if the power ever goes out in a city like Baltimore for more than 24 hours?

We'll see this August if Obama doesn't get the nomination.

That's great. Has the prevalence of such behaviour spread?

...and have other problems such as dealing in narcotics, rape, and such been added to the mix since then?

Lets see what two things have we learned from your reply?

1) YOU are a hypocrite, Little Miss home schooling is the greatest thing since sliced bread thinks a child is better off in prison then in school- Hey don't you compare schools to prison on a regular basis?

2) YOUR positions don't hold water- How many times have you said that homeschooling is the answer for "all" of the education systems woes. Now you say that it won't work in this case.

Might be time to come of you high and mighty pedestal and rethink your position, and be a little kinder to those of in the trench doing the job you can't/ won/t do.
