BLAINE, Wash. – A Canadian says he got a face full of pepper spray after repeatedly asking a U.S. border inspector in Blaine, Wash., to say please. Desiderio Fortunato says he thought the inspector who told him to turn off his engine Monday was rude and asked him to say please.

The 54-year-old British Columbia resident told The Bellingham Herald that the inspector repeatedly ordered him to turn the car off and then said he would spray him if he didn't.

Fortunato says he was stunned and blinded by the pepper spray and was pulled out of the car and handcuffed. He was detained about 3 hours.

Customs and Border Protection spokesman Mike Milne (MILL'-en) in Seattle says it was a lawful order that travelers must obey. He says the use of force is under review.

I wouldn’t have blasted him with pepper spray, but this guy sounds like a real dick.

And I thought Pepper Spray was a defensive weapon.

Is that how the new order will enforce their orders?

I think I could have humored the jerk and said please at least once before he got sprayed or even worse tased.

At least the victim is admiting he asked the agent to say please. I have heard several stories of law enforcement pulling people over and sometimes pulling them out of their cars. I, myself was pulled over once going to work about a year ago. He was yelling and jumping up and down because I didn’t stop and he said I was blocking his way to a traffic accident. Not true the freeway was clear. In fact, I really never say him. He was on a Mickey Mouse motercyle and never showed any identification that he was a cop. I just kept repeating Right Officer. I told my boss and he said I did the right thing; but since I didn’t have a cell phone at that time I had to wait to report him. I never heard whether he was real or not. All I know was he was madder than anyone I have ever seen.

So you never know.

Possibly. On the other hand, a little politeness isn't too much to ask from our public servants.

Here in North Carolina, the state trooper writing you a ticket will say "Sir" and "Ma'am" and "Please." It's a mark of professionalism.

It's just amazing to me.

Folks get the pepper spray for asking to hear "please" when they stop at the border for inspection.

Meanwhile, terrorists and criminals sneak and crawl across our borders free as birds.

Like my papaw always said, “It don’t hurt none to be polite, but demanding it others might get ya pepper-sprayed” :)

Agreed.
Texas State Troopers are the most polite and professional people you will ever encounter as they are writing your ticket.

I got ticketed once for the crime of walking my dog off-leash.

The cop was enraged and abusive (!?). He wanted to give me a beat-down so bad I could taste it.

So I was real careful and didn’t give him any excuses.

I think Tom Paine called it: “common sense.”

I just posted yesterday about a rude public servant, so I hear you there. But this guy was not an American, and when you're entering a strange country, you don't try to be annoying first thing.

Just do what the guy asks and go on your way.

Good point. I gave up on expecting manners from federal employees and Canadians long ago.

One was very polite as he asked my friend for his stereo.

Another thing I’ve noticed about the Carolina troopers... no Marine Corps drill instructor ever had a crisper uniform, sharper creases, more spotless shoes, or a fresher haircut than these guys. It’s been true of every one of them I’ve seen. Not sure how they get the whole force that way, but they seem to.

Like it or not there are times common sense prevails.

For several years we fished each summer in Canada.

As we entered Canada, Canadian Customs had a job to do and their did it.

Returning to the US almost without exception US Customs were border line rude. Just one of those times you shut up and put up with the BS.

If he would have been American, I bet he would have gotten a "please". Canuks don't pay his salary. Lawful orders are to be obeyed.

You never know what the last Canadian liberal dope smoking puke had said to him either. He may be lucky he didn't get tazed.

Guard: Do you have anything to declare?
Canadian: Say please
Guard: Do you have anything to declare?
Canadian: Say please
Guard: I'll need you to come with me
Canadian: Say please
Guard: I don't have to say please if you refuse to comply
Canadian: Say please
Guard: If you do not comply I'll need you to come with me
Canadian: Say please
Guard: Please tell me your name
Canadian: Say please
Guard: Ok, you're coming with me now
Canadian: Say please
Guard: "pulls out pepper spray" SAY PLEASE!
Canadian: AHHHH, FOR THE LOVE OF THE FOREST, DON'T KILL ME EH
Guard: PLEASE, now will you come with me?
Canadian: Say please

Border etiquette isn't a right, it's a dice roll.
