The Chicken Fix (Look out - here it comes!)
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 25, 2009 | Opinion Asia

And now some welcome news for a change: In a little-noticed move, the U.S. Congress tore down a barrier to imports of chicken from China last week. It's a victory for free trade and for a more rational approach to safety standards.

President Obama signed an appropriations bill Wednesday that clears the way for the imports by allowing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct in China the safety inspections U.S. law requires for any country exporting food to America. The congressional move in 2007 to block funding for those regulatory steps amounted to an import ban. Now USDA will go through its normal regulatory process to open the door to Chinese imports, which could take 18 months or so.

"PETA won’t have any chicken farms here to picket."

The only plus I can see is PETA trying a protest in China. That would prove to be interesting.

"What? Tyson will not be able to import chicken from China?"

They would and no doubt will.

But I suspect Tyson enjoys significant competitive advantages at present because of the size and number of U.S. facilities they have.

That advantage will disappear when anybody can import cheap chickens from China.

I don’t even eat chicken now except a sinful KFC crispy occasionally. That stuff is full of hormones, drugs etc already, what’s the Chinese stuff going to contain.

Wish we could get a true free range 5 or 6lb bird to roast instead of plastic wrapped fryer “parts”. Yuk.

Of course! They can't smuggle all the H5N1 infected birds into Vietnam, just can them up, freeze dry them, make 'turkey jerkey' out of them, and send them over...

I knew they'd figure out a way to get that virus over here...

See post #10. I understand this is not an option for everyone but it points in the right direction.

I don’t want any food from China. Why is Congress forcing this down our throats?

China melamine scandal prompts mass chicken cull

Fri Oct 31, 2008 BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese farmers, hurt by a spreading melamine scandal, slaughtered tens of thousands of chickens, state media said on Friday, as authorities in Shanghai began checks on feed producers for local fisheries.

Shanghai’s Livestock Office would check more than 100 feed producers in the city, and promised tests for the city’s seafood products if any feed were found to contain melamine, the Shanghai Daily newspaper said on Friday.

Melamine is a compound used in making plastic chairs and other things, but is often added to food to cheat nutrition tests.

At least four children died and tens of thousands were made ill from drinking milk formula adulterated with melamine this year.

The melamine scandal has since spread to other dairy products, sweets and chocolate, prompting recalls of Chinese-made food around the world.

A rash of cases involving melamine-tainted eggs exported to Hong Kong and South Korea, and sold in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, have aroused fears of how prevalent the compound is in Chinese animal feed.

Problem is, people won’t be able to tell which chicken is made in the USA

Apple juice is the same today. Any juice that comes from or uses concentrate is from china

Yea... This will end well... not

When we surrender our food production to communist countries then we are in deep deep trouble! I am putting on my tinfoil hat and suggesting that with all we have seen coming at us it seems as if Conress is not telling us everything! It is like they know that someone or something is holding a gun to our heads and if we do not conform to what ever world policies that are dictated to us then perhaps something bad will happen! America has been sold down the river! Short of a real revolution this crap will not stop untill The United States is no more.

Allowing the Chinese to poison the American population with the governments, ok. Nice! Anyone out there getting the drift. Our tax moneys going to China to invest in wind turbines built in China by the Chinese to be used in a Texas wind farm, nice. Biden at ribbon cutting ceremony in his HOME STATE OF DELAWARE for a new GM plant opening, why how transparently convienient, why not Michigan? A trillion dollar healthcare bill to cover 2 million of the 395 million people in America, sounds econmically sound, don’t it? I’m just rambling in disbelief! get the hell out and vote!

Tyson Pilgrims and others make beaucoup money exporting things like chicken feet and assorted innards to China which are regarded as delicacies. Also it saves hundreds of millions of lbs of land fill space.

None of that stuff ends up in landfills. It goes into things like pet food, make-up and shampoo.

We won't know. Sure, we'll buy the Raised In American chicken meat but eventually virtually any product containing chicken will contain the cheap, imported chicken.
