Sunshine, Vitamin D, and Death by Scientific Consensus
Pajamas Media ^ | Jan. 7 | Patrick Cox

The traditional “Top Ten Breakthroughs of the Decade” lists have been appearing in science-related publications. One breakthrough, however, is conspicuously missing from every list I’ve seen so far. I’m talking about the new understanding of the role and proper dosage of the sunshine vitamin D.

The “scientific consensus” that has held sway for four decades regarding both exposure to the sun and vitamin D has collapsed. What has emerged in place of the old “settled science” is the knowledge that most people in America are seriously vitamin D deficient or insufficient. The same is true for Canada and Europe, and the implications are staggering.

Simply put, unless you are one of the few people with optimal serum D levels, such as lifeguards and roofers in South Florida, you can cut your risks from most major diseases by 50 to 80 percent. All you have to do is get enough D. It also means we can significantly reduce both health care costs and the staggering national deficit by taking a few simple steps....

I take 3000 IU Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol) daily. Probably not enough.

Anyone who accepts medical advice from an unqualified internet blogger is going to get information of value roughly equivalent to what they paid for it, and usually significantly less.

I had my vitamin D serum levels tested at one of the nation’s preeminent executive physical locations.

The doctor told me I was the ONLY person he ever tested
who had serum vitamin D levels in the optimum range.

ever.

I take 5000 units of D3 per day.

Heard a couple of months ago from Dr. Rosenfeld on Fox that most people are deficient on vitamin D and folks should be tested when they get their annual blood tested.

He said he was shocked to find he was deficient in Vitamin D and recommends that people be aware of this fact.

My hubby and I both started taking Vitamin D and I can tell you it has made a huge difference in our energy and mental levels.

It works!

Every new scientific breakthrough means that the previous “scientific consensus” on the subject was just disproven.

“Anyone who accepts medical advice from an unqualified internet blogger is going to get information of value roughly equivalent to what they paid for it, and usually significantly less.”

You are no doubt correct. The problem, however, is determining who is “an unqualified internet blogger,” and who is qualified. Patrick Cox seems to be rather qualified; but more importantly, he links to what appear to be very qualified sources.

You need to do some research of your own. Please. It could extend your life. Seriously.

I dare say that there is not a more important article for EVERYONE to read than this one.

Okay, I’m sold. But how much should I take? And is there a certain brand or type of pill that is better?

I take 2000 iu daily plus 8oz skim milk and 15 minutes of direct sunlight when possible. Also, probably not enough.

I’ve been taking increased D-3 for over three years now and frankly, I don’t get sick! I used to get sick, but haven’t in a long time, even when people around me are sick.

...15 minutes of direct sunlight when possible.

Likely for naught at this time of year:

“Sun exposure Most people meet their vitamin D needs through exposure to sunlight [5,31]. Ultraviolet (UV) B radiation with a wavelength of 290-315 nanometers penetrates uncovered skin and converts cutaneous 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D3, which in turn becomes vitamin D3 [9,32,33]. Season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog, skin melanin content, and sunscreen are among the factors that affect UV radiation exposure and vitamin D synthesis [33]. The UV energy above 42 degrees north latitude (a line approximately between the northern border of California and Boston) is insufficient for cutaneous vitamin D synthesis from November through February [5]; in far northern latitudes, this reduced intensity lasts for up to 6 months. In the United States, latitudes below 34 degrees north (a line between Los Angeles and Columbia, South Carolina) allow for cutaneous production of vitamin D throughout the year [27].”

I am a molecular biologist.

The body has no mechanism for excreting excess vitamin D, and vitamin D overexposure from excessive supplements can lead to toxic accumulation in adipose tissue, organ failure, kidney stones, deafness, etc.

Most people can get enough vitamin D to suit their needs from about 15 minutes of sunshine three times a week, even without any dietary supplements or drinking vitamin D supplemented milk.

Anyone who oversells a treatment by saying that ‘50 to 80% of disease’ can be prevented by it is an obvious loon.

But go ahead and get your medical advice from “Pajama Media” if you want.

vitamin D overexposure

Meaning your blood tests show high levels - outside the range?
