Snuff Civilization ( moonbat alert )
Alternatives Magazine ^ | Derrick Jensen

Posted on 02/18/2010 6:46:27 AM PST by Halfmanhalfamazing

Had somebody snuffed civilization in its multiple cradles, the Middle East would probably still be forested, as would Greece, Italy, and North Africa. Lions would probably still patrol southern Europe. The peoples of the region would quite possibly still live in traditional communal ways, and thus would be capable of feeding themselves in a still-fecund landscape.

Fast forward a few hundred years and we can say the same in Europe. Somehow stop the Greeks and Romans, and the indigenous people of Gaul, Spain, Germany probably still survive. Wolves might howl in England. Great auks might nest in France, providing year-round food for the humans who live there.

Salmon might run in more than token numbers up the Seine. The Rhine is almost undoubtedly clean. The continent is forested. Many of the cultures are matrifocal. Many are peaceful.

Had someone brought down civilization before 1492, the Arawaks would probably still live peacefully in the Caribbean. Indians would live in ancient forests all along the Eastern seaboard, along with bison, marten, fisher. North, Central, and South America would be ecologically and culturally intact. The people would probably have, as always, plenty to eat.

Had someone brought down civilization before the slave trade took hold, 100 million Africans would not have been sacrificed on that particular altar of economic production. Native cultures might still live untraumatized on their own land all across that continent. There probably would be, as there always was, plenty to eat.

It is, but I invite Derreck to go live somewhere without technology, medical advances, et al. I suspect within a month or two he would be back and then would shut his stupid mouth.

“Their dream is a small, technologically primitive society devoid of moral values outside of nature worship.”

______________

Personally, I always thought their dream was of a very small technologically advanced society with them inside. And the rest of humanity living in mud huts and caves serving them and providing the ‘I am better than you” narcissitic requirements.

Exactly right. And as someone now in her 50s, I am thankful every day for modern things like medicines, a plentiful food supply, air condition/heat and a real bed.

Any event so harsh as to reduce population numbers down to the level this bonehead is endorsing would fall hardest on ... ummm ... this bonehead and his ilk.

Lib peace-niks like this guy seem to think they’ll just prance through the forest and pluck low-hanging fruit all day. Do they really believe that?

I’m spending a lot of time, energy and treasure trying to set up a small-scale farm (or just a much bigger garden) just to provide for family needs, and it ain’t easy.

So, hippie boy can go pluck all the low-hanging fruit he wants. Enjoy! We’ll look in on him around mid-January, to see if he’s still prancing.

Well we can start by “snuffing” out the parts of “civilization” that writes and believes this kind of drivel.

That way they can do their part to “save Gaia”.

the lives of traditional indigenous peoples the world over are far more full of leisure and play than ours.

Instead of baseball or basketball they enjoy playing find enough food and shelter to get thru the day

This is the sort of guy who will eat his own seed corn. They are morons who don't understand that conservation is a luxury of highly civilized technological civilizations. Substance societies always outgrow the local food supply and destroy nature. Only a technological society with massive excess food and production capacity can afford to set aside large amounts of prime land for conservation.

If you love nature, you had better support industrial farming. Because it is high tech, energy intensive, industrial farming that allows 5% of the population to feed the rest while letting millions of acres of land go fallow. Low tech substance agriculture requires that you plow every patch of workable land. And there is no room for wolves, buffalo, or Bambi in that world. You can only save the whales if there is a cattle farm available to make up the loss of food. Point that out to a hippie and watch their head explode.

Arawaks were peaceful. And they were a favorite food of the Carib Indians who were cannibals, and, in fact, the origin of that term.

“It is, but I invite Derreck to go live somewhere without technology, medical advances, et al. I suspect within a month or two he would be back and then would shut his stupid mouth.”

Exactly. What the anti-civilization types dont realize is that with every tech development people decide if will make their lives better compared to what they currently have. The hunter gatherers chose agriculture when it became available, people who rode horses chose autos, those who lived in caves chose huts, hut dwellers chose houses, those who got their water from streams chose indoor plumbing, etc. Civilization didnt appear out of no-where, it developed from rational choices. Its also interesting that when some primative tribe is discovered, its members tend to leave in great numbers to go live in a town.

***Arawaks peaceful? How about “peaceful cannibals”.**

Arawaks were about to die out. They were the major food source for the Canab(Carib)indians, from which we get the word “Cannibals”.

Colombus recorded how his men found a Canab camp with captive pregnant Arawak women in cages. The Canabs considered newborn Awarak babies a delicacy. Yummy!
