Got any references to a comparison of the relative merits of the different varieties (russet vs. red vs. yukon gold, etc)?

I’m thinking, in general, “does well in cool, wet, cloudy weather” AND “matures quickly” would be the proper avenues of pursuit.

I love Yukon Golds, but they seem very prone to go bad in storage. Russets are hardier.

Sounds like the proper plan is to grow a few Yukon Golds and a lot of russets, and eat the Yukons first.

Sprouts, in your kitchen. Stored rice and beans, along with various condiments to make it interesting, is highly nutritious.

I very seriously am happy to not be living in a Turd World country, because if this volcano keeps erupting, or if Katla goes, then there will be HUGE increases in the price of food...which can only mean famine in the Turd World, as all of us can pay for the food. It isn't like the world is the least bit practical in this modern age, and has stores of food to use in the event of widespread crop failures (caused by volcanoes and such).

I wonder if anyone in any position of power will actually learn something from this. Nah, it'll never happen.

I think it was in 1305 a huge famine hit Europe, leading to many reports of cannibalism.....
Again, it was report that the haze was such that their were no shadows.

Since this kind of thing can happen periodically, we really need to think in terms of gradual, volutary reduction in the population of the earth, or else as you say millions will starve when the system breaks down from natural or man made catastrophe.

I just saw an episode of How The Earth Was Made on Iceland in which Laki was discussed. Look at the line of craters and lava that eruption left behind. It's enormous, like the Earth was ripped open in that part of the island.
