Carbs against Cardio: More Evidence that Refined Carbohydrates, not Fats, Threaten the Heart

Eat less saturated fat: that has been the take-home message from the U.S. government for the past 30 years. But while Americans have dutifully reduced the percentage of daily calories from saturated fat since 1970, the obesity rate during that time has more than doubled, diabetes has tripled, and heart disease is still the country’s biggest killer. Now a spate of new research, including a meta-analysis of nearly two dozen studies, suggests a reason why: investigators may have picked the wrong culprit. Processed carbohydrates, which many Americans eat today in place of fat, may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease more than fat does—a finding that has serious implications for new dietary guidelines expected this year.

I cannot speak to research, as I don’t do that for a living, but I can speak to personal experience.

I had the same experience about 9 years ago. I had blood work done just before I went on Atkins, and again after 3 months. My cholestorol and Tri's have never been high... Total Chol before I started was 172. After 3 months, it was 148. Triglyc dropped from 95 to 50.

I remember, I lost 20 pounds in the first 21 days. :-) That was fun. Overall, I went from 300 pounds to 250.

Nine years later, I've creeped back up to about 260-265, and I don't like it. I have a very hard time STAYING on Atkins... Mostly, it's bread that gets me. :-( I love bread...

I have been pretty good though, about staying on the diet 3-4 weeks at a time, losing 10-15 pounds... I've been in the same 15 pound range now for 9 years.

A lot of people give up on low carb diets early because they feel weak and puny. This is because you lose a lot of water weight in the beginning, and that causes a loss of potassium. I strongly encourage anyone who starts a low carb regimen to supplement with potassium. 99mg is the strongest you can buy over the counter. I used one pill 4 times a day, and it worked great for me. A lot of people on high blood pressure medication would also feel better with extra potassium.

I have that same issue with my mother. She’s just looking for the magic pill that will solve her problems without her having to do any work. Then she complains about the cost of medicines! LOL.

What I try to emphasize with people that low carb diet really doesn’t mean you are sacrificing! Once you get off the refined carbs you realize that there is an abundance of really good, tasty food out there. I rarely eat taters, rice, pasta and I save my carbs for an occasional great dessert.

The other great benefit is weight loss. Because I was on steroids, I had gained LOADS of weight. I have successfully lost 60 lbs and kept it off for over 5 yrs.

I really gave the Atkins diet a solid try a few years ago, and it worked initially, I dropped 30 pounds or so, but I never quite got over my cravings for bread, potatoes, pasta, and would always fall off the wagon. Plus I kept getting sick all the time on it. I just couldn't stay on it for any length of time. I was at wit's end a few months ago, when the Lord led me to the Let's Do Lunch diet.

It is sort of a modified low-carb diet, but allows all sorts of fresh fruits, beans, peas, corn, popcorn - the author discovered that those foods don't seem to be fattening. And they seem to really help with the cravings for starchy foods that always derailed me before. You definitely have to avoid sugar, high fructose corn syrup, wheat, flour, etc.

Making lunch your big meal of the day seems to help as well, hence the diet's name.

I can't believe more people haven't heard about this diet yet - it seems to be working for me. So far, I've lost 25 pounds in less than 2 months. I've still got a long ways to go, but I am very pleased with my progress so far.

The best weight loss, control of blood sugar and cholesterol I had was the two years I was on Adkins. It works.

George McGovern under the Carter administration brought you the food pyramid.

Just another pyramid scheme.

By government "consensus" fats were bad and carbs were health.

I just went by what made ME feel good, have higher energy levels, etc--a high protein (red meat!), relatively low carb diet, whole milk, real butter.

One size does not fit all. Eat what makes you feel good, no two people are the same.

LOL. I did too at one time, until my doctor and the thought of not being around for my son won me over. I may not have added years to my life by becoming healthy/active but each one I'm here for is much more enjoyable than it was before.

I'm so confused about all of this that I just don't know what to do anymore.

I do know this, medical "professionals" fall back on the reduced fat\reduced sodium meme for every ailment.

I went to see the doc recently because of a swollen left ankle. The nurse practitioner told me I was going into the initial stages of heart failure and advised drastic changes in my exercise and diet regimen. This, without EVER asking me what I eat of how often I exercise. (I was actually in to see her because the ankle was slowing down my workouts).

Worse yet, she then refused to refer me to a cardiologist. That’s when the fireworks started. I have my cardio consult next Monday. :0)

FYI

Although the subjects on the low-carb diet ate the most saturated fat, they ended up with the healthiest ratio of HDL to LDL cholesterol and lost twice as much weight as their low-fat-eating counterparts.

The next time you eat a piece of buttered toast, he says, consider that “butter is actually the more healthful component.”
