Broke Dad Put Abby Up for Sail
Fox News ^ | June 14, 2010

Posted on 06/14/2010 9:50:22 AM PDT by Ron C.

Here's a dose of reality.

The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

I think I’d be more concerned about her being alone on a fishing boat with 16 French sailors ...

“Someone ‘ready’ would be able to sail around the world without daddy on speed dial for when the engine breaks.”

I think they should eliminate the PIT CREWS at the INDY 500. If a driver can't keep the car running, he's out.

The boat builder is just covering himself,

That's conjecture. So what's the conjecture on Ian Kiernans statement?

It is questionable if Paul Bunyan could have saved that mast from that wave.

Which proves what everyone has been saying...she didn't belong out on the Indian Ocean in winter.

Minus that wave

It wasn't a single wave. It was a winter storm with 60 knot winds.

She didn't have a pit crew. The closest vessel was 2 days away.

No, I don’t know her, but I’ve read her blog. On her website ( http://www.abbysunderland.com/ask-abby.php ) she wrote, “I am taking my school books with me so that will keep me busy. I don’t want to stay in high school another year so I’m motivated to get my school work done.” She also has several non-academic books on board, including the book “Do Hard Things” by the Harris brothers and stuff by Tolkien, as well as a Kindle.

Even beyond her reading, she has received quite an education navigating the world — more than most teens.

I wonder why we’re so quick to criticize this accomplished teen.

What were her parents thinking an asteroid could have hit too!

Isn't that where most asteroids hit? Out in the middle of the oceans?

Or the deep end of the pool in summer. She could hit her head on the diving board for Gods sake...

The poor girl has been brainwashed by her evil parents....They've all been infected by balloon boy syndrome....It's all lies!

Doh! Actually I didn’t, can you imagine what some here would think about that these days? Obviously you & I are victims of child abuse. /s

You can be sarcastic all you like but that won’t change facts. One doesn’t sail the Indian Ocean in winter or try to climb Mt Everest in winter. Those are simply facts.

That comment says a lot about your character and thought-life: I see now why you’re so interested in this young woman.

The first man to become Admiral in the U.S. Navy captained his first ship at age 12.

I can’t believe FReepers have such low expectations from teens.

Captains have crews.

The failure here is indisputable.

No. Did not know the mast hit her on the head and knocked her unconscious. Thanks for informing me. Obviously she could have easily been killed on this reckless and irresponsible voyage. I wouldn’t even advise an adult to take this type of trip all by himself. But the fact that it was underage minor makes this borderline parental negligence at best, attention seeking publicity at worst.

I suggest a firing squad.

You didn’t. You are addressing the money side of the equation while I’m arguing that she should live her own life. Others here and in the media have suggested she should not be allowed to sail around the world alone at 16. They’ve also suggested she should be removed from her parents custody.

I suspect that Abby had a safer ship and more contact with her “crew” than Farragut ever had.

No one is criticizing her. I think her very brave.

It doesn’t change the matter that she was misguided in undertaking this venture, and that the cost of rescue will be borne by third parties who were not part of the decision process.

We are criticizing the adults in her life who should have done a better job in guiding her.

I would not have allowed any of my kids (under 18 to do this without me along or another sailor, of age)

I was taking high speed motorboats out SOLO, into the middle of the roughest water, along with a bunch of other boats piloted by people of different ages and sexes, many of them with very little experience, when I was 12.

***First it was the balloon boy.***

First it was an 11 yer old girl piloting plane around the world with her father as co-pilot. She crashed and burned in Wyoming.
