Son of Pilot Who Dropped A-Bomb Opposes Plan to Send U.S. Delegation to Hiroshima Ceremony
Fox News ^ | August 4, 2010 | Joshua Rhett Miller

Posted on 08/04/2010 12:45:04 PM PDT by Stoat

EXCLUSIVE:  The son of the U.S. Air Force pilot who dropped the first atomic bomb in the history of warfare says the Obama administration's decision to send a U.S. delegation to a ceremony in Japan to mark the 65th anniversary of the attack on Hiroshima is an "unsaid apology" and appears to be an attempt to "rewrite history."

James Tibbets, son of Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., says Friday's visit to Hiroshima by U.S. Ambassador John Roos is an act of contrition that his late father would never have approved.

"It's an unsaid apology," Tibbets, 66, told FoxNews.com from his home in Georgiana, Ala. "Why wouldn't it be?  Why would [Roos] go? It doesn't make any sense.

"I know it's the anniversary, but I don't know what the hell they're trying to do. It needs to be left alone. The war is over."

My grandfather helped to liberate the Philippines from the Japanese and was deployed there when the bombs fell. My mother, my aunts, myself, my cousins, my kids might never have been born had the war continued.

My brother-in-law (Navy Lt-cmdr) was stationed in Japan for a decade and married a Japanese woman. My father-in-law’s first interaction with her father was as follows - they naturally determined that they served on opposite sides of the war (my FIL was on his way over to Japan on a Navy ship when the bombs were dropped and his ship turned around), and were both very appreciative of the fact that rather than having been fighting enemies, they were now family.

The bombs saved lives, generations even, on both sides.

Thank God we nuked Japan, and we should have done it sooner if possible.
For every Japanese that died in the 2 nukes, probably 5 were saved because the war ended.
And hundreds of thousands of Americans who would have died on the beaches of mainland Japan.

The people that have a problem with this, can go %$*& their selves. And then read some actual history.

Thank you Mr Tibbets and company.

My dad served on USS Saratoga (CV-3)--

My mom said, "Philip, everyone went down to enlist after Pearl Harbor."

A ravaging beast devouring Asia picked a fight with us and we finished it.

The Deviate Islamo Commie Kenyan (DICK) doesn't like the word "victory" because it elicits "that whole deck of the Missouri thing when the emperor of Japan surrendered"--

You wanna slaughter civilians, bayonet babies--then cry like a little girl when we kick your ass--

Get in the limo with Barry and Larry tonight, for you'll not find any sympathy for the devil here.

When we issue an communique to the still-glowing pile of molten debris that was once North Korea, we'll look pretty silly if it includes a denunciation of the use of nuclear weaponry...

So when the police issue a communique to the public about shooting a murderer, they'll "look pretty silly" saying they shot him because he didn't drop his gun?

If we ever have to reduce North Korea to a glowing pile of molten debris, it will be because if we didn't, they were about to do it to us, or Japan, or someone else.

Or do you think all nation-states are morally equal, including North Korea and America? There are a few million North Koreans living on grass, without heat or indoor potable water who disagree with your collectivist dream. And about a hundred and fifty million murdered people who would also disagree, if they still could. But their communist governments didn't feel they were "politically correct" enough to stay safe from their death panels.

That's my little way of saying that not only don't you have the moral high ground here, you're also in support of murderous cowards. The only reason North Korea DOESN'T nuke someone is their belief we WOULD turn them into a glowing pile of molten debris if they did. That's called REALITY.

I think you're on the wrong website, chum. Run along back to DU - your ignorance makes you look pretty silly here.

My brother was KIA on Okinawa. I was about tenth in line for new combat gear at a replacement center on the island of Leyte when a Lt. came out and told us to go back to our tents- the fighting was over. My memory was/is that everyone at that repel depot felt a great relief because we had been told the invasion of Japan was very close and was going to be very costly. Even though I also thanked God for events ,I wished the bomb had been dropped a few months sooner to end the Okinawa battle.

From Rush’s song “Manhattan Project”:

“Imagine a time when it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon that would settle the score
Whoever found it first would be sure to do their worst —
They always had before...

Imagine a man when it all began
The pilot of `Enola Gay`
Flying out of the shockwave on that August day
All the powers that be, and the course of history,
Would be changed for evermore.”

Thank God that we developed it first.

I think you misunderstood my point. Our policy should be one of massive nuclear response to the use of nuclear weapons. That is not a position that one maintains by occupying the moral high ground. It comes from occupying the high ground on top of a pile of nuclear weapons.

Communiques and denunciations are just silly posturing. If we were to launch a massive retaliatory strike against the Norks because they used their puny stockpile on somebody, nobody is going to care about our strongly worded letter that lands on top of the smoldering pile.

Similarly, I think we said what was really important about Hiroshima and Nagasaki back in 1945. No reason to add to that now.

Nor any sympathy here.

If I ever meet him, I'll have no courtesy and no sympathy and no taste.

He gives all his well learned politics, just to lay the US to waste.

I like the response that the curator of the Smithsonian air&space museum gave to the Japs when they requested the loan of the one in the Smithsonian for the 40th anniversary.

WE SENT YOU 2 AND YOU LOST BOTH OF THEM, YOU CAN'T HAVE THIS ONE!

“I stood under and walked around the Enola Gay at The Air and Space Museum.”

When I was there my wife’s nephew was on of the curators and he took us on a 2 day tour of the warehouses and the restoration facilities of unrestored airctaft in Silver Springs and the Enola Gay was one of them and I crawled all through it.

He is right. The strange thing is, we now have the right (Pat Buchanan) and the left (all of them) beasically acting like we should apologize for the War. It is madness- and suicidal.

Your father served honorably and deserves our thanks.
I always enjoy personal posts by people, it makes things REAL. The world has changed since that time when people all loved and supported their country.

Sadly, it takes a major attack on us to bring people together. The future will tell..

I agreee.
Japan war crimes included eating American prisoners “For example, an Indian POW, Havildar Changdi Ram, testified that: “[on November 12, 1944] the Kempeitai beheaded [an Allied] pilot. I saw this from behind a tree and watched some of the Japanese cut flesh from his arms, legs, hips, buttocks and carry it off to their quarters ... They cut it [into] small pieces and fried it.”[106]

In some cases, flesh was cut from living people: another Indian POW, stated.
