This weekend, President Obama defended the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque two short blocks from Ground Zero, despite cries of insensitivity from some New Yorkers and accusations of mischief from some pundits. This finally gives you an opportunity to add a powerful national-security cudgel to the message of economic woe you have been pushing as the midterm election approaches.
The political potency of the issue is obvious. Polls overwhelmingly show the President has put himself on the wrong side of public opinion. Opposition to the new facility arouses acute emotion and creates near total unity among relatives of 9/11 victims, first responders, Republican officeholders, potential 2012 presidential candidates, Tea Party members, the Fox News–talk radio–Drudge Report echo machine and many of the highly coveted swing and occasional voters whom you will need at the polls to win in November.

The words Obama said on Friday in support of this abomination he agreed to and proclaimed before all of those assembled and before the entire world OF HIS OWN FREE WILL. (For him to now be saying that he did not mean what he said is ridiculous.)

Something along the lines of what New York does within its borders is New York's business.
That translates to "butt out" -- but that surely won't work w/ respect to 9/11, in response to which the nation has already mounted several very substantial responses, including two wars within the overarching Bush Administration rubric of a "War on Terror" which Obama has very specifically repudiated for reasons which must remain suspect, which suspicion he fuels by throwing gasoline on it every time he issues another mark of conspicuous support for Islamists at the expense of Western Civilization and the American Experiment.
It doesn't get much more high-concept than what Obama is doing, and Republicans are right not to "leave it alone".
What more evidence do you want that they are right, than being told to back off by a TIME polemicist? TIME being the rag, by the way, that coined the term "Clinton hater".
Claims that the Victory Mosque controversy should stay with New Yorkers are no more valid than a claim that New Yorkers should be free to "redevelop" Bedloe's Island and Ellis Island. The World Trade Center, whatever it was on 9/10, is now a national massacre site. You might profitably have a look at Charlie Krauthammer's weekend op-ed on that point. (I don't have the link -- saw it in print.)
Interesting idea. So they are attacking the American idea .... like Communists ..... would you propose an "anti-Islamist" or "anti-Salafist" addendum to university syllabuses, in much the way that many Southern universities added "anti-Communism" courses to theirs 50 years ago? Course readings in Averroes and Aquinas? It'd be different.
Does this mean that they have good OPTICS?

WHO really thinks that the 1st Amendment (which is about “Congress shall make no law....”) means that no one should CARE what happens at the site of the worst terrorist attack in US history?
HOW exactly does one translate “freedom of worship” into “freedom to stomp all over the raw memories and beliefs of countless millions of Americans?
WHEN exactly are we supposed to stop caring about the future of this nation and our civilization?
WHERE do people learn to think that Ground Zero should be treated as the Muslims treated the Hagia Sophia basilica?
WHY do you feel such utter certitude in believing that the 70+ % of Americans who DO think this is an important issue are delusional and wrong, and that it neither should nor will be a political problem for Obama’s Party of Appeasement and Dhimmitude in 2010 and beyond?
Americans should also know that, going back to the 60s & 70s, Morton Halperins not only "advised" that Soviet conventional and nuclear military forces were only defensive, but also advocated unilateral U.S. disarmament.
Like his father, the author would have Americans again surrender to an enemy committed to our destruction.
Whether 5th columnists or useful idiots, the Halperins have revealed themselves and the purpose of their "advice." Patriotic Americans best treat that "advice" accordingly.
No one is suggesting they make this the "core" of their campaigns. But it can certainly be a potent part of the overall message. The vast majority of the nation opposes the mosque being built there. It is a simple thing to state that position and ask what your opponents position is. As Halperin points out, that leaves the Dems with 3 choices, none of them good.
Halperin was a big Hillary supporter in the 2008 primaries, and both then and afterward he was at considerable pains to point out how the rest of MSM had gone a-whoring after Magic Manchild and Tom Daschle's strategic hopey-changey blank-silver-screen non-message.
Now Halperin appears to be carrying Manchild's water as the latter circles the bowl on his open sponsorship of jihadism and its would-be endzone dance in New York.
You must have listened to Rush’s sound bites of the MSM when the networks describing MO’s trip to Spain said the “OPTICS” regarding this weren’t good to most Americans.
