The developers of an Islamic cultural center that would include a mosque near Ground Zero have rejected Gov. David Paterson's offer to help them find a different site.
Paterson said today the group is apparently committed to building in the proposed site. "I think they would like to stay where they are, and I certainly respect that and I certainly respect them," Paterson said.
But, Paterson said the dialogue would have been useful as the project has ignited nationwide debate over freedom of religion and anger over the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.. "Having said that, how much more foresighted would it have been if the Imam who is the developer of the project had been willing to hear what we are actually talking about?"
The planned $100 million center would be built two blocks from the World Trade Center site, where nearly 2,800 people died when Islamic extremists flew jets into the twin towers. The project is headed by Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, a Muslim cleric who has worked to improve relations between Islam and the West.

Paterson better NOT offer them TAXPAYERS money or land!!
Pattersons an idiot. He needs to be gone.
And, this is a surprise to whom??
Oh, they are going to jam this thing down our throats. Make no mistake.
Kabooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom! (And they thought watching the WTC towers fall down was entertaining! They ain’t seen nuthin yet!)
Who’s have thought Governor P would be the person to come out looking best in this fiasco? Strange days indeed.
Yep.
I can’t see how anyone would want to go in it while its’ being built. I am sure it will reek of urine and rotten pork.
This just proves that the Iman has ulterior motives!
This is a Victory Tower!
The more loudly and messily this drags out the more of a nightmare the actual construction will be and the more people will peel off from the project. I can’t imagine at this point what sort of union man would be willing to walk through picket lines of protesters under the glare of the camera. I can’t imagine the union bosses who would give this their imprimatur given what an ugly spectacle it would be and what public outrage it would bring down on their heads. Are the workers going to come to the gate in armored scab buses and wear ski masks?
Sure, there are Muslim-owned contractors but even the muzzie contractors and vendors would have to think twice about the repercussions to future business. Cordoba Initiative can send out for foreign contractors and the same down-trodden Bangaladeshi workers who currently toil under the Arabian sun but can you just imagine the astronomical expense of importing every worker, tool and sack of cement from overseas? It will all have to be unloaded in Canada and trucked to NYC as I kinda doubt ILWU will touch it at this juncture. Fewer and fewer entities who do substantial business in the U.S. will touch this with a ten-foot pole the longer and louder the controversy becomes.
The Cordoba Project may have the POTUS, the dem-liberal establishment, the MSM and the entire governing apparatus of the United States of America in their hip pocket but that’s all for naught if the Oil sheiks don’t give Imam Rauf the millions he needs. Yesterday the director of Al-Arabiya publicly came out against the project—and Al-Arabiya is owned by the UAE sheiks. That makes it official.
The smell of flop-sweat is overpowering now that this morning’s WaPo is reduced to desperately entreating the previously-reviled GWB to come out and bless the project. It has certainly been hilarious to hear all the “seminar callers” trying to talk over Rush, Laura, Sean, etc.
The lib/dems have lashed themselves to the mast of this sinking dhow and they just keep doubling down and lashing out incoherently at the whole G-D’d country with threats and insults. Now Pelosi is reduced to threatening to investigate the opposition as if there was some secret organization of white men in suits smoking cigarettes al la “X-Files” somewhere pulling our strings. I previously joked that maybe Obama would throw stimulus money at the project but now why not? They just keep ostentatiously screwing us over and throwing dung at us, why stop now?
Popcorn sales must be off the charts.
Good post.
I agree. Bloomberg's remarks appear preposterous to anyone who is familiar with New York, such as his observation that the mosque will improve "diversity" - New York is one of the most, if not the most, diverse cities in the world and already includes numerous mosques and quite a few predominantly muslim-oriented neighborhoods.
Also, his suddent epiphany in favor of enlightenment rights is strange - his method of governance is to shove things down people's throats that they don't want, including ignoring property rights, voter referendums, etc.
Bloomberg is speaking to a different audience, trying to make an impression somewhere else, as a "statesman" or something. Whatever it is he is looking for, it will come out with time.
Can’t you just imagine the demolition going ahead through rallies and protests as we move through the election season?
It, it boggles the mind.
You speak as if his objective is to govern the United States with respect to his vow to uphold the Constitution. That is not the case. His goal is to overthrow the Constitution, by any means necessary. Pinioning a foothold in the epicenter of capitalism for our new overlords is part of that strategy.
The Unions won’t lift a hammer.
If it means anything, he doesn’t understand normal Americans, so you are even ;)
I have to give a great thank you to Governor Patterson. He may be a democrat but atleast he is standing up to these thugs. Whether it is politicing or whatever, atleast someone is standing up to these thugs.
Unions leaders are nothing but a bunch of whores. They’d sell their mothers and daughters to the highest bidder.
They want this. It is a symbol of winning. It is the goal..Sharia.
