Gen. Petraeus: Dove World Outreach Center's 'Burn a Koran Day' endangers US troops
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 09/07/2010 | Jonathan Adams

Posted on 09/07/2010 6:19:50 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.

Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.

The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.

General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.

""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

You have proceeded to the point of telling lies about me, so I shall ignore anything more you have to jab my way.

Paul presided at the burning of texts that were lies.

You simply can’t deny it.

I can’t say I agree with everybody here on this one.

Muslims join the Western Left in gleefully burning the American flag on a regular basis, but I have looked hard and found no instances of public or organized Bible burnings by Muslims.

I could see burning the Iranian flag, perhaps, but even then, most of the Iranian people desire to topple their regime also.

The enemies of freedom and Western culture are most threatened by exposure. Let us concentrate on doing that and setting a higher standard for our own conduct.

Show even one example

Here's Ann's entire column. Find her call for converting by sword like your Jihadist comrades.

Need a minute?

And he did not bother to do anything similar, that we are told about, at any non-repentance scene.

You simply can’t deny it.

You must not know him very well.

Remember this — DOVE is a fringe group.

America is a majority Christian country and I don’t see any other churches supporting what DOVE is doing.

Best to ignore them ( but then the press will milk this for what it’s worth ).

RE: Paul presided at the burning of texts that were lies.

Which Paul ? If you’re referring to the apostle, I’d like to see which chapter and verse of the New Testament says that.

There do exist Afghan Christians, and to my knowledge, it is not against the law in modern Afghanistan to have a Bible (in any language) in one’s possession. Afghanistan is not supposed to be subject to the whims of the Taliban any longer, and justifying their killing of these people does not help Afghanistan in any way.

It’s pointless to argue with x**** on a roll. He will simply constantly change his angle of irrelevancy.

Same with M***** except for also folding in ad-hominem lies and constantly pricking and poking and trying to provoke.

Did I just see the one go at the other? Be still, my eyes!

Charcoal briquettes stamped with the Cult of the Moon God's crescent moon symbols might be a big seller.

How did I miss this.
You should do a thread on this. Maybe General Patraeus can explain the burning of BIBLES ordered by the U.S Military!

“Trying to win the hearts and minds of muslims is endangering our troops. We need to kill more bad guys until they decide it isn’t worth fighting us. Although, they will eventually act up again, and then we need to kill more.”

I’ve been saying this since we screwed up the “peace”in Iraq. We haven’t killed anywhere near enough of these people. Japan and Germany were destroyed after WW2 - they knew they were defeated and didn’t fight us any more. That’s when we knew HOW to win a war......

I say Burn ‘em............

Actually, they just kill people found with Bibles in their possession. I don’t know what they do with the Bibles themselves, but I doubt that it’s anything good.

I don’t think the Dove Ministries thing is a particularly good idea, although I think Islam is evil and I think it would be a great idea to wipe out the Koran altogether. However, from a PR point of view, I don’t think it was the smartest thing because it simply gives the Muslims some propaganda.

My local press has been absolutely full of whining, garbagy, full pages articles about the glories of Islam and the peace-loving Muslims of Gainesville (who have had a “dawa center” - that means proselytism or conversion center, by the way - hulking on the outskirts of town for a number of years now).

I’m sure Petraues is familar with the concept of total war, but he’s not the one setting the strategy for Afghanistan.
